Seeking a Laboratory professional to lead the Central Specimen Processing and Lab Office departments at Trinity Health Ann Arbor.
Responsible for the supervision of the Laboratory personnel engaged in the conduct of routine and/or specialized tests and analyses. Provides a general level of technical and managerial direction to (a) ensure the accuracy and efficiency of services provided by the assigned group, (b) resolve day-to-day problems within the laboratory, (c) and ensure or conduct the necessary on-the-job and formal training of subordinates and (d) manages the utilization of resources. Also participates in the performance of laboratory procedures that fall within the range of the group on an as needed basis. Provides quality patient care considering age specific, developmental, and cultural needs. Demonstrates unit/area-designated competencies.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE
Education
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, or university in Medical Technology, Histotechnology or equivalent work experience, or related science required, depending on section(s) to which assigned.
- Medical Technologist (MT)/Histotechnologist (HT) - ASCP, or NCLS certification preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of progressively more responsible experience, one or two years in a leadership role required.
Skills/Knowledge
- The analytical and administrative skills necessary to plan, guide and control the day-to-day activities of one or more sections of the laboratory.
- An in-depth understanding of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in assigned area of responsibility.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Recommends and participates in selection, transfer, promotion, discipline and discharge of subordinates.
- Prepares capital, personnel, operating and revenue budgets in conjunction with Senior Site Laboratory Administration. Monitors and maintains area of responsibility within budgetary expense guidelines, via optimal utilization of staff, review of vendor options, development of alternate methodologies and other cost containment activities.
- Orients, trains, schedules, and evaluates technical and non-technical personnel assigned to the Laboratory to ensure proper performance of their duties, and adherence to departmental and hospital policies and procedures. Maintains employee competency program.
- Maintains laboratory compliance in accordance with regulating agencies. Participate in external proficiency testing program.
- Supports Laboratory's marketing efforts, including emphasis on service, development of supporting materials
- Coordinates and reviews the work of laboratory personnel in assigned group to ensure that all tests and procedures are performed properly in accordance with prescribed instructions and that all results are valid and accurate.
- Oversees the inventory system so that an adequate level of supplies and materials necessary to complete work of assigned group is available.
- Provides advice and guidance to subordinates on technical and procedural problems which arise in the conduct of tests or procedures; functions as interdepartmental liaison for investigation and resolution of problems.
- Maintains and evaluates the quality control and preventative maintenance programs and records in assigned group; trouble-shoots and repairs equipment when necessary.
- Assists the Section Chief in preparation and maintenance of laboratory quality control and procedure manuals.
- Participates in the evaluation and development of new laboratory techniques, maintaining proper records.
- Recommends changes in methods, equipment, personnel and the like to improve the functioning of the assigned group.
- Monitors test utilization patterns for inpatients and outpatients within area of responsibility, with development of methods to positively impact these patterns.
- Monitors compliance with the Laboratory Safety Program in assigned area.
- Participates actively in the Laboratory's educational activities, including both intra- and interdepartmental in-service programs. Remains current in areas of responsibility through seminar attendance and self-study.
- Responsible for work assignment/scheduling and payroll verification of hours worked for respective cost center(s).
