DESCRIPTION
Mendocino-Lake Community College District is currently accepting applications for a Library Specialist to join our student-focused, friendly and collaborative library team.

Under direction of the Head Librarian, provides technical, public and circulation services including maintaining the library collection database; ordering/processing all library books, media, supplies, materials and equipment; organizing student-oriented programming and displays; and assisting with library budget development and maintenance.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
Salary Range (25): The monthly starting salary range is $4,447 - $4,669. There are six annual step movements; initial placement will be at step 1, unless approved by the Superintendent/President. Please see the current salary schedule here: MLCCD - Salary Schedule
Benefits: With no monthly premium contribution from the employee, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes family medical, dental, vision, EAP benefits and employee life insurance. Additional voluntary life insurance is available for employee purchase. Benefits are effective the first of the month following hire date.
Holidays and Paid Time Off: The successful candidate will earn twelve (12) days of vacation and twelve (12) days of sick leave per year. Vacation leave increases with the length of service. There are twenty (20) paid holidays annually.
Retirement: This position is eligible for CalPERS Retirement.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
The successful candidate will support institutional success by executing the following duties:
  • Remains current on Library automation system; Maintains the database system for the library print, non-print, periodical, media and equipment collection utilizing OCLC standards and procedures and other related bibliographic software;
  • Catalogs new acquisitions; creates bibliographic and holding records; resolves discrepancies; compiles data regarding use; recommends items to be removed from collection; updates database;
  • Working with the relevant college programs, accepts materials for cataloging in Lending Library and coordinates with Library Assistant and relevant departments and faculty to keep materials current and relevant;
  • Plans and coordinates the regular inventory of the Library collection; resolves related problems;
  • Researches requests for interlibrary loans, determines appropriate lending sources and processes requests; receives and returns materials.;
  • Assists the Head Librarian with organization of library displays and programs for students, faculty and staff;
  • Assists the Head Librarian with budget development; monitors all library accounts, including media and special funds; provides budget recordkeeping and prepares related reports;
  • Prepares purchase orders for library supplies, books, print and non-print materials, computers, serials, media, and equipment; tracks and reconciles receipt of orders; resolves discrepancies with vendors; approves and submits invoices for payment; notifies faculty, staff, and students of orders received;
  • Explains library policies and procedures; resolves complaints; assists students as needed with accessing library databases and basic computer and technology use;
  • May collect and document the payment of fees, fines, and other transactions; post to student computer system; check books in and out; maintain physical condition of Library; assist with security of library system;
  • Participates in library tours, orientation programs and other public relations activities;
  • Uses a variety of computer software to compose and prepare correspondence, memoranda, special and regular reports, bulletins, surveys, text and formatting of web site information and other written materials;
  • Trains and provides work direction and/or oversight to assigned short term non-continuing (STNC) and student workers;
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL STANDARDS:

  • Mobility: frequent sitting for long periods; frequent walking and standing; occasional reaching above and below desk level; frequent balancing on varied surfaces.
  • Dexterity: frequent fine manipulation sufficient to operate a computer keyboard; frequent grasping to handle individual papers, write/take notes and feel individual objects.
  • Lifting: frequent lifting of papers, files, equipment and material weighing up to 30 pounds; may lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Visual Requirements: frequent use of vision sufficient to read files, documents, and computer screens and do close-up work.
  • Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and speaking in person and on the telephone.
  • Emotional/Psychological Factors: frequent need to make decisions and concentrate; frequent contact with others; frequent deadlines and time-limited assignments.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Library environment; subject to interruptions and distractions.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must meet Human Resources guidelines for qualified hiring; including but not limited to a Live Scan background check and completion of TB Test.
Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, geographic and ethnic backgrounds of students, staff, and faculty.
