The Position


Are you interested in making a positive impact on your community by assisting the Ontario City Library to create and support lifelong reading, learning and enjoyment? The Ontario City Library is seeking motivated team-oriented individuals interested in gaining valuable experience working in a municipal library. The Library Monitor Specialist is responsible for assisting library customers with the use of the library's computers, internet and other electronic resources and general library inquiries. The ideal candidate will possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and will be willing to work a flexible schedule to accomplish the department's goals and objectives.
The Library Monitor Specialist is a paid, part-time/temporary position, scheduled to work on average 19 hours per week but no more than 29 hours per week, and is not eligible to participate in the City's health insurance or retirement plans. This recruitment will be used to establish an eligibility list for current and future vacancies.

The City of Ontario reserves the right, if necessary, to accept only the first one hundred (100) applications from applicants that meet the qualification guidelines below. The Ontario City Library has been serving the public as a City department since 1894. The Ovitt Family Community Library and Lewis Family Branch contain over 315,000 items, including books, magazines, newspapers, DVDs, audio books, kits and a local history collection. A wide variety of technology is available for the public including internet, several software, eBooks, and state-of-the-art technology through Lightspeed makerspace that offers access to equipment such as 3D printers and a laser cutter. The library offers a wide variety of programs and services for all ages including early literacy, Veterans Resource Center, adult literacy tutoring, workforce development training, and the Robert E. Ellingwood Model Colony History Room.

Examples of Essential Functions



The essential functions typically performed by the Library Monitor Specialist include the following:


  • Provides technical assistance to customers using the library's electronic resources.
  • Assists customers with locating basic information using general resources.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves technical issues; escalates technical issues for resolution as necessary.
  • Provides basic customer service with other library equipment and location of library materials as needed.
  • Elicits cooperation of library patrons in observing library rules and regulations.
  • Answers general telephone inquiries or directs calls to appropriate staff.
  • Copies, faxes, scans, and distributes documents; sorts, checks and files basic records; types and verifies information in basic forms and documents.
  • Assists with library programs, outreach, class visits and tours.
  • May assist with the shelving and circulation of library books and materials.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualification Guidelines

Education

High school diploma or recognized equivalent.

Experience

Six or more months of experience working with the public. Some experience and/or training in personal computers, computer networks, Microsoft Office and the internet.

Special Requirements

Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.

Desirable

General knowledge of library operations; ability to speak Spanish.
