About the role:

We are currently seeking a Lead Surveyor to join our Engineering team at our Shoal Creek Mine. Shoal Creek Mine is one of the deepest underground coal mines in the U.S. Located on the Black Warrior River with barge transportation leading to the Port of Mobile in the Gulf of Mexico, the mine produces one of the highest quality met coal in the US. Eight-foot-tall entries, a brand-new longwall, paved road into the mine and 15+ years of coal reserves make Shoal Creek mine an ideal place to work. 

 

Located in between Jefferson, Walker, and Tuscaloosa counties in Alabama, offers beautiful rivers and lakes, landscapes, and rolling hills at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains. A major airport is just under an hour away in Birmingham. Minutes from Tuscaloosa and West Alabama and a diverse, family-friendly community with something for everyone. The Lead Surveyoris responsible for providing underground and surface surveying and mapping associated with mine production, planning, permitting, and reclamation to assist in achieving the safety, production, and financial goals and objectives of the Company.

 

Duties will include:

  • Responsible for all underground and surface surveying, data collection, data assessment and mine mapping associated with mine production, planning, permitting, construction and reclamation.
  • Performs underground mine surveys to establish and extend lines and grades within the mine and end-of-month stockpiles.  
  • Responsible for basic engineering calculations and recording of mine data for production and engineering reports.
  • Perform as-surveyed computer aided drafting, polygon and survey files editing, and assist engineering personnel to update maps and files to reflect status of operations and facilities at the mine.
  • Perform surveys and staking for exploration drilling, environmental work, and projects.
  • Perform underground mine surveys including face and overcasts.  
  • Perform face surveys for mine management.
  • Maintain all surveying equipment, ensure proper operating condition, spare parts, and supplies to eliminate downtime and maximize efficiency.  Responsible for maintaining proper inventory of equipment and supplies as needed.  
  • Ensure compliance with all Company, State, and Federal policies, procedures, laws and regulations.
  • Willing and available to work extended hours or other shifts as necessary.  
  • Assist with engineering planning

 

The Lifestyle:

This position will work Monday-Friday, rotating every two weeks on a 3-shift rotation of midnights, afternoons, and days schedule on 8-hour shifts. This position may also require the necessity to work weekends, holidays, or another shift as deemed necessary.

About you:

  • Minimum 2 years associate degree in surveying, mining engineering technology, or civil engineering technology, OR 5 years' experience in underground coal mining including at least 3 years of underground and surface surveying, and mapping experience.  Longwall experience preferred.  
  • Be highly self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to accurately perform required surveying tasks including extending control points, sight lines and grades; recording details of 'as built' mine geometry, completing check surveys, and applying corrections.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with all management levels, intercompany departments, and mine operations personnel.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal mining regulations.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD / Carlson SurvCAD Software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. 
  • Proficiency with operating total stations, data collectors and the ability to interpret and convert the data into AutoCAD.  
  • Proficiency with GPS systems.
  • Mine Examiners certification for the current state of employment (or the ability to obtain certification at the first opportunity).

 

Physical Requirements

  • Must have the ability to stand for prolonged periods of time on uneven, rocky surfaces.
  • Must have the ability to be seated for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles.
  • Must have the ability to walk for up to 4 hours at a time. Will be required to walk through different sections of the mine with varying degrees of clearance and headroom.
  • Must have the ability to perform office-related tasks which may include prolonged sitting or standing.
  • Must be able to use a computer.
  • Walking ability will be judged according to SCSR emergency evacuation plan required and approved by MSHA.
  • Must have the ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required by Company and MSHA.
  • Must have the ability to bend or stoop for a full work period as a result of mine height.
  • Must have the ability to climb up and down stairs/steps and climb on and off equipment and ladders.
  • Must have the ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle), and have rapid reflex movements of the arms and legs as well as good hand to eye coordination.
  • Must have the ability to lift 25 to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and the ability to occasionally lift items weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Must have the ability to work in extreme conditions, including but not limited to changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise from low to high decibels, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.

 

Physical Requirements - Office

  • Must have the ability to sit for up to 8 hours.
  • Must be able to use a computer and communicate effectively in various forms, including email and by phone.
  • Must have the ability to review paper and electronic documents and complete computer entry of data from paper documents.
  • Must be able to find, remove and return files to/from file cabinets and discuss issues by telephone and in person.
  • Must be able to operate copier, fax machine, etc.

  • In addition, individuals must meet the minimum vison and hearing requirements to fulfil a safety sensitive role:
       At least 20/40 acuity (Snellen) in each eye with or without correction. At least 70 field of vision in horizontal meridian measured in each eye. The use of corrective lenses should be noted on the Medical Examiner's Certificate.
       No more than 40dB average hearing loss in better ear (with or without hearing aid).
