ABOUT US
The Stanford University Graduate School of Education (GSE) is a top-ranked school of education, known for its prestigious faculty, rigorous graduate degree programs, and its impact on the quality of education across the world. The GSE is committed to developing leaders in education research, practice and policy. Our community includes over 60 faculty, 400 students, 200 staff, 14,000 alumni and countless people from the local and global communities we work with and impact. The work environment is dynamic, deadline-driven, fast-paced, and energetic.
Housed at Stanford Graduate School of Education, the Stanford Accelerator for Learning is the first university-wide initiative connecting scholars across disciplines and with external partners to bridge research, innovation, practice, and policy, and bring quality scalable and equitable learning experiences to all learners, throughout the lifespan.
The Stanford Accelerator for Learning focuses on learning challenges most in need of new discoveries, evidence, and solutions and where we believe Stanford can make the most difference. Those include: adult & workforce learning, digital learning, early childhood education and development, equity in learning, learning differences, and policy & systems change.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Stanford Accelerator for Learning is seeking an Instructional Designer who will help design and develop instructional materials and programs for the Virtual Field Trips Project. Virtual Field Trips enable learners to engage with a location, often without physically traveling there, in a digitally mediated way. Virtual Field Trips can broaden access to locations and experiences and may help mitigate inequities due to cost, accessibility, or inclusivity. Advances in technology have reduced the barriers to creation, opening opportunities for educators and students to become content creators, embedding concepts in locally or personally meaningful contexts.
This project focuses primarily, though not exclusively, on how Virtual Field Trips can enhance learning in science domains. Target learners range from elementary school through higher education. This Instructional Designer position will be part of a team that aims to explore and promote the use of Virtual Field Trips for supporting meaningful learning. This is a one-year, fixed term position, with potential for continuation.
Primary responsibilities will include:
In this role, you will work with collaborators to design and develop materials to support the following aspects of the Virtual Field Trips Project:
  • Develop lesson plans and student materials around existing Virtual Field Trips.
  • Help to design new Virtual Field trip experiences that students will engage with.
  • Help to create lesson plans and materials that enable students to create their own Virtual Field Trips to share how what they are learning connects to the world around them.
  • Develop materials and professional development workshops to help educators learn how to create or help their students create Virtual Field Trips.

This position is highly collaborative, and involves working with researchers, project managers, faculty, and other key project stakeholders within the Stanford Accelerator for Learning and other partner organizations.
Following an iterative, design process, core duties will include:
  • Interface with stakeholders to perform analysis of learner, teacher, and school needs.
  • Proactively consult with subject matter experts to identify and formulate learning objectives and content.
  • Draft storyboards and prototypes.
  • Design and develop lesson content, instructor and participant materials, including performance support materials.
  • Implement, evaluate and maintain learning solutions.
  • Develop and deliver Train-the-Trainer programs or faculty development programs.
  • May participate in extensive user acceptance testing and quality measurement for newly created materials.
  • Interact with partner organizations during the design, development, and implementation process as needed.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:
  • Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in consulting with partners and subject matter experts to assess learning needs and recommend sound solutions.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in applying instructional design theory, models, and best practices.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using instructional design tools such as learning project plans, design documents, learning hierarchies, storyboards, prototypes, etc.
  • Ability to clearly and succinctly convey learning content in a manner that engages learners and improves retention rates.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate the effectiveness of learning materials.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently

Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience teaching in a K-12 or college setting
  • Master's degree in Education or a science-related field
  • Experience coaching/training teachers
  • Experience teaching with learning technologies
  • Strong communication and collaboration skill

Location: The position is available for in-person or hybrid. 2 days of in-person work are required each week. For up to 6 weeks out of the year, you may be expected to work in-person at local school sites.
