Job Summary and Qualifications
The Infection Preventionist promotes and delivers high quality, patient-centered care by assisting with the administration of Infection Prevention policies, procedures and programs. As a member of the Infection Prevention program and team, the Infection Preventionist identifies, investigates, reports, and monitors the incidence of nosocomial infections among patients and personnel, and implements policies and procedures to prevent cross-contamination. The Infection Preventionist is also responsible for assisting with inservice programs related to infection prevention and infection control, and with the clinical aspects of the Employee Health Program, including pre-employment processing, occupational health testing and surveillance.
- Participates in infection prevention surveys and surveillance/rounding, based on the organization's risk assessment plan, in accordance with state, federal and other reporting requirements. Evaluates environment, practices, products, devices, and equipment as relating to infection prevention.
- Applies epidemiologic principles and statistical methods, including risk stratification and benchmarking, to identify target populations, determine risk factors, design prevention and control strategies, analyze trends, and evaluate processes.
- Collects and analyzes data related to infection prevention and control. Assesses employees and their environment for injury/illness risks and reports potential patient/staff safety issues. Implements appropriate safety precautions and follow-up procedures to reduce nosocomial risks.
- Interprets data to determine when patients or employees are at acute risk for infection. Confers with medical and nursing staff to determine appropriate implementation of isolation precautions when indicated. Effectively allows or stops use of equipment dependent upon results of microbiological studies.
- Implements epidemiologic investigation during the occurrence of infections and infection clusters, using CDC criteria and evidence-based practice. Gathers and analyzes all pertinent data to determine if a confirmed infection is nosocomial in origin and to identify potential sources.
- Monitors and evaluates the efficacy of infection prevention activities, including methods of asepsis, sterilization, and disinfection. Monitors for communicability of contagious processes.
- Implements and conducts special studies when appropriate or requested by the Infection Control Committee Chairperson.
- Assists in coordinating prevention and containment efforts for potential infections, pandemics, and bioterrorist events.
- Provides regular written and/or verbal reports to administration and relevant committees, departments, personnel, and external agencies.
- Reports occurences of communicable diseases to federal, state, and local public health authorities, in accordance with laws and regulations.
- Maintains accurate records of nosocomial infections among patients and personnel, in compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies.
- Coordinates with other departments and multidisciplinary teams to facilitate implementation of infection prevention strategies in order to maintain continual readiness in meeting regulatory and accreditation requirements.
- Assists in the development, assessment, reassessment, and implementation of the Infection Control/Employee Health Plan. Reviews and updates policies and protocols as needed to maintain compliance with regulations, standards and evidence-based guidelines.
- Acquires and maintains current, comprehensive knowledge and skills in the area of infection prevention, infection control, and epidemiology.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the specific conditions, diseases, and treatment therapies for the specific patient/health care worker population of the organization. Stays abreast of changing infection control practices and presents plan for compliance in a timely manner.
- Serves as a resource to hospital personnel and medical staff on patient placement, isolation, and other Interventions, to control or reduce infections or infectious risks among patients, personnel, medical staff and visitors.
- Establishes effective interpersonal relationships with physicians, nurses and all other members of the healthcare team. Communicates efficiently with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies.

Nursing Specific Responsibilities (RN Only)

What qualifications you will need:
- Associate Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma Or
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing or health-related field
- 1+ years experience in a clinical setting Preferred
- 1+ years experience in Infection Control Preferred
- 1+ years experience in a leadership role Preferred
- Certification in Infection Control- CBIC certification within two years of hire
