What you will need:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Bachelor of Science in Biology with completion of Medical Technology
- Masters in Public Health
- Three or more years Infection Control experience or equivalent. Three or more years of experience in clinical nursing or 5+ years of clinical microbiology experience or the equivalent.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
- Manual dexterity to operate keyboard (computer skills); ability to work in office environment
- Walk to departments throughout the organization
- Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) if employee has a Medical Technology degree
- Registered Nurse State of Illinois if employee has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Certified in Infection Control (CIC) at the time of hire or within 2 years of hire
- Current membership in Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC)

JOB SUMMARY
Performs surveillance for hospital-acquired infections as determined by the Infection Control Committee. Reports infection prevention and control information to committees, individuals and departments as needed. Provides infection prevention and control education to employees, volunteers, and contract workers. Assists Employee Health Services with infection prevention and control concerns and reports communicable diseases in patients, employees, and visitors to the appropriate public health authority as required by law.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Functions
- Perform surveillance for hospital-acquired infections
- Format data into charts and graphs for presentation at the Infection Control Committee, etc.
- Give inservices on infection prevention and control
- Investigate elevated numbers or rates of infections as indicated by surveillance
- Communicate infection rates to authorized agencies
- Do rounds on units and departments and give feedback on necessary improvements
- Report persons with communicable diseases to the appropriate public health authorities
- Work closely with the department director and the medical director of infection control
- Act as the leader of infection prevention and control in the director’s absence
- Continue to update knowledge of infectious diseases and prevention of infection through ongoing education
