Purpose of the Position: The Health Information Specialist I is responsible for clerical support within the HIM department which includes filing, scanning, sorting, and entering data/documents into the Electronic Health Records system. This position is also responsible for providing customer care to clients, patients, staff and adhering to all North Central Health Care policies and procedures.
Education, Licenses, Certification, Skills, and Experience Requirements:
- Minimum Education:
- High School Diploma/GED.
- Minimum Work Experience:
- Possess 1 year experience working in a healthcare setting.
- Prior customer service or medical office experience.
- Required Skills
- Computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
- Ability to communicate and work well with team members.

- Preferred Qualifications, Skills, Education, Licenses, Certifications and Requirements:
- Certified as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).
- Possess 1-2 years of experience in a healthcare setting.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and clinical workflows.
Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintains regular on-site attendance with minimal or no tardiness.
- Comfortable adapting to dynamic workflows.
- Scanning documents into Cerner and other NCHC software programs.
- Frequent interaction and communication with internal and external clients and ability to remain calm in conflict situations.
- Follow HIPPA guidelines and ensuring the confidentiality of sensitive patient information.
- Uploading documents into NCHC software programs using Adobe.
- Prepping and scanning documents making sure a patient identifier is on required pages.
- Learns various job duties within the department for cross training and coverage.
- Ability to pay close attention to details.
- Provide support and help complete medical record requests.
- Able to maintain understanding of HIPPA, Joint Commission, state/federal regulations, and NCHC policies and procedures.
- Correctly organizes documents in each patient’s record according to the chart order procedure to be sure that all documentation can be easily accessed.
- Tracks and updates production and other medical records metrics.
- Ability to manage time effectively and work in a high-volume work environment with frequent interruptions.
- Able to work as part of a team with minimal supervision.
- Completes record retention and destruction of both paper and electronic elements to comply with NCHC policies and procedures.
- Meets or exceeds established department productivity within a 6-month period.
- Participates in weekly HIM Team meetings and other NCHC meetings.
- Completes Hospital Based Inpatient Psychiatric Service (HBIPS) category assigned each month.
- Able to complete company assigned learning modules in a timely manner.
- Efficiently handles incoming and outgoing calls, mail run, faxes, and walk-in client requests.
- Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
Non-Essential Job Duties:
- Ability to understand all EHR applications and how they integrate with one another.
- Ability to perform routine maintenance of scanning equipment.

20% Sedentary Work: Continuous sitting at desk for several hours occasional standing, walking, turning, twisting, bending, stooping, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, grasping, and lifting of under 10 pounds as required.
5% Medium Work: Frequent lifting, standing, walking, turning, twisting, bending, stooping, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, and grasping. Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds unassisted.
