About the Georgia Tech Library
The Georgia Tech Library is a member of the University System of Georgia library consortia, Atlanta Regional Council for Higher Education (ARCHE), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), and the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL), and the Association for College and Research Libraries (ACRL). The Georgia Tech Library has a unique and progressive service model that relies heavily on technology and electronic formats. Electronic resources account for 79% of our overall content, 98% of the Library's content expenditures and 99% of our content usage and the majority of our print collections are held in a high-density, climate-controlled storage facility in collaboration with Emory University Libraries. Job SummaryThe Library (https://library.gatech.edu/) at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia invites applications for a an innovative and experienced professional to lead the librarians and staff in the Technical Services Department. Technical Services plays a vital role for the library and the institution in providing access to content owned or accessed by the library and encompasses Acquisitions, Cataloging, Interlibrary Loan, and Reserves functional areas. This position would report directly to the Associate Dean for Content, Access, and User Services and represent the interests of the Technical Services Department as a whole by leading strategic initiatives related to improving access and discovery. This position is responsible for the overall administration and coordination of work and for establishing and implementing Technical Services policies, standards, and procedures. The position would serve as the department head with programmatic responsibility for functional areas and direct supervision of up to 3 non-tenure academic faculty and 8 Technical Services Associates. The leader of Technical Services must be committed to meeting the Georgia Tech community's unique need for innovative, cutting-edge, and collaborative solutions to the issues surrounding content acquisition, discovery, and access. Worksite location is Atlanta, GA.
This is a 12-month faculty position with an effort distribution of 50% administration, 30% librarianship, 10% scholarship, and 10% professional service to the library profession. Up to two (2) years credit for previous professional experience may be given at the time of employment, in which case such credit will be stated in the offer letter. The Georgia Tech Library Faculty may enjoy flexible work schedules, professional development, and a healthy work-life balance. This is not a remote position, but some teleworking hours is supported.
ResponsibilitiesProvide and improve library services and resources; enrich the research, learning, and scholarship of the Georgia Tech community through the following:
50% Administration
- Lead department in the development of a shared vision and strategic direction for Technical Services operations.Align operations and workflows with strategic priorities. Participate in long-range planning, working in collaboration with library leadership, library faculty and staff, and others to develop strategic opportunities supporting library Technical Services. Advise the Associate Dean for Content, Access, and User Services concerning departmental matters. Provide expertise and leadership to faculty and staff on Technical Services best practices, policies, and workflows. Hire, train, supervise, develop, and evaluate Technical Services faculty and staff. Establish and maintain communication with department faculty and staff to facilitate the work and ensure communication of library activities and initiatives. Lead projects and teams related to the discovery and access of Library content.Provide leadership in pursuing new opportunities for resource management, access, and discovery and for the Library¿s involvement in national programs.Collaborate with Technical Services Librarians and other GT Library colleagues to ensure a unified strategy for resource acquisition, discovery, delivery, and access of scholarly resources.
30% Librarianship
- Ensure high quality, productivity, and adherence to standards for acquisitions, resource management, resource sharing, and course reserves. Serve as the lead in exploring innovative tools and methods in streamlining processes for Technical Services workflows.Coordinate the on-going identification and implementation of opportunities to improve service to stakeholder groups and increase efficiency within all Technical Services areas.Develop, communicate, document, and train staff on policies and procedures.Serve as a subject matter expert on Technical Services process, policies, and workflows, and in support of the Library on projects, initiatives, committees, and more.
10% Scholarship and Creative Endeavors
- According to expectations for library faculty members, contribute professionally through research, scholarship, and creative activities.
10% Service to the Library, Institute, and LIS Profession
- Foster positive relations with faculty, students, and staff and promote the Institute and Library¿s commitment to the Georgia Tech values. Serve on library and university committees as assigned. Contribute to the profession through service to professional organizations at the local, state, regional, and national levels, as appropriate.
This position vacancy will be filled at the rank of Librarian II, Librarian III, or Librarian IV. Librarian II
- Appointment to this rank requires an appropriate terminal degree, typically an American Library Association (ALA) - accredited master's degree, a degree in a subject related to archival work, and/or in the appropriate area of specialization.
- Evidence of scholarship and/or evidence of service to the librarian profession.
- 5 years of professional experience.
Librarian III
- Appointment to this rank requires an appropriate terminal degree, typically an American Library Association (ALA) - accredited master's degree, a degree in a subject related to archival work, and/or in the appropriate area of specialization.
- A strong record of scholarship and service demonstrating significant contributions to the librarian/archivist profession.
- 10 years of professional experience.
Librarian IV
- Appointment to this rank requires an appropriate terminal degree, typically an American Library Association (ALA) - accredited master's degree, a degree in a subject related to archival work, and/or in the appropriate area of specialization.
- A strong record of scholarship and service demonstrating the highest standards of professional contributions to the librarian profession and are recognized widely by peers.
- 15 years of professional experience.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in cataloging, electronic resource management, or a related field in an academic library setting.
- Two or more years of progressively responsible supervisory experience.
- Demonstrated commitment to developing a team through cultivating a culture of coaching, mentoring, and training.
- Knowledge of emerging trends in higher education and new developments in Technical Services, particularly the management of library content in support of teaching, scholarship, and research.
- Ability to lead departmental change, engage in big picture thinking and build consensus around a strategic vision.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, facilitate internal communication, and coordinate efforts across library departments.
- Strong knowledge of cataloging and metadata standards (e.g., MARC21, RDA) and/or acquisitions and electronic resource workflows.
- Experience with Ex Libris Alma and Primo Systems.
- Demonstrated experience with project management, including planning, communication, and assessment.
- Instruction and/or training experience.
- ILS system migration experience.
- The ability to promote an inclusive and welcoming educational/work environment.
- Has expertise in teaching, scholarship, and/or service that contributes to access, diversity, and equal opportunity in higher education.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, analytical, written and oral communications skills.
This is a benefits-eligible position with a minimum salary of $90,500 plus an administrative stipend, commensurate with education and experience
