Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District is accepting applications for a career Firefighter / Maintenance Technician. This is an immediate opening. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Application materials must include a resume, cover letter, copy of driver’s record, (five years) and copies of applicable certificates or transcripts that support the announced position.

The general responsibilities of this position include responding to fire, hazmat, and other emergency calls to protect life and property; combating, extinguishing, and preventing structure and wildland fires; driving emergency apparatus; participating in rescue extrication operations and providing emergency medical care to the sick or injured. Duties are frequently performed in severe weather conditions that include temperatures as low as -10°F, extreme winds, and heavy snowfall. (Duties in addition to those noted in this paragraph are listed on the next page.) Applicant must have a motivated self-starter attitude and show initiative to complete tasks and projects without direct supervision.

Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Protection District’s area of response encompasses approximately 258 square miles in the rural southwest corner of La Plata County. First responders in our District experience a wide variety of emergency calls primarily highway motor vehicle accidents and wildland fires. Responders frequently interact with members of federal and local emergency response agencies.

Qualifications are listed as desired, preferred, and required. All qualifications do not have to be met to apply. We are willing to train.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Previous emergency responder experience of two years career and / or five years volunteer experience Live in the district or within two miles of the boundary Current CO EMT or National Registry EMT able to get CO registration within six months Current CPR/AED certification Current CO/IFSAC firefighter I and II NWCG Red Card or S-130/S190 Wildland Firefighter certification Incident Command ICS-100, ICS -200, ICS-700, ICS-800 qualifications CDL - A or achieve driver operator certification Ability to complete Arduous level Pack Test annually

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE OR EXPERIENCE: Demonstrated organizational, tactical, technical and communication skills Mechanical aptitude and moderate to advanced computer skills preferred ASE Certification

REQUIREMENTS: Valid CO driver’s license or eligibility / ability to obtain within 30 days Must be at least 18 years of age Basic computer skills required Background evaluation and pre-employment drug screening required. Subject to post offer / pre-employment NFPA 1582 medical examination

COMPENSATION: Starting salary firefighter Maintenance Technician $60,000 - $70,000 DOE Position is eligible for benefits package including: FPPA pension, life and disability coverage, paid holidays vacation and sick leave and numerous training opportunities. Pay increases are based on performance, longevity, and completion of additional qualifications.

ADDITONAL DUTIES INCLUDE: Covering district for emergency response on days, nights, and weekends as needed Writing incident reports, ensure incident reports are sent to the State of Colorado Programming department radios as needed Maintain inventory tracking of radios, structure gear, wild land gear and PPE Performing truck checks: checking apparatus and ensure readiness state Maintaining vehicles and performing minor repairs. Maintaining equipment keeping small engines such as pumps, chainsaws, generators, lawn mowers and snow blowers running in a steady state. Tracking vehicle expenditures and vehicle fuel usage per vehicle. Maintaining / keeping vehicle records up to date Calibrating air gas meters Maintaining buildings and grounds to include mowing, snow removal, cleaning bays and making repairs to buildings and grounds as needed Report deficiencies or repair needs to the Department Chief Issue District burn permits Assist in planning and conducting training Mentor and recruit volunteers Public outreach education Other duties as assigned This list is not all inclusive of all tasks to be performed.
