Job description

We are looking for an experienced Finance Director to lead our fast-growing nonprofit journalism organization through a period of transformation and oversee our daily financial management. We are an Indigenous-led news organization covering Indigenous communities across the country, and in Canada and Australia. To ensure our continued growth and sustainability, we are looking for a brilliant financial mind to lead and execute a financial management strategy for a nonprofit like ours, including forecasting and analysis, capital planning and managing financial policies.

The successful candidate will be joining us at an exciting time in our development. We are adding seven news bureaus in regions across the country. Our multimillion-dollar budget will double over the next three years. We are a forward-looking, mission-driven organization and will need an experienced CPA, or financial wiz, who can create, build and launch new financial strategies.

Summary:

This position is responsible for organizing, directing and supervising the fiscal operations of IndiJ Public Media in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and federal and state laws. The Finance Director reports to the Chief Executive Officer and contributes to the overall success of the organization by effectively managing all financial tasks. The Finance Director supervises the finance team and works closely with leadership to provide accounting services to all departments.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan, organize, direct and oversee the accounting system, fixed assets, billing and invoicing, collection, payroll and risk management.
  • Supervise the finance team, coordinate and direct regular staff meetings with the finance team under the guidance of the CEO, addressing problems, concerns, workload, priorities, and weekly assignments/duties
  • Keep CEO and Executive Team regularly informed on financial matters regarding the finance team, including present and potential problems and suggestions for new and improved systems and processes.
  • Meet regularly with the executive team to provide and review financials and reconcile grant and invoicing documents.
  • Evaluate and coordinate with the finance team to ensure that appropriate training and organizational learning opportunities are pursued, as well as provide technical assistance to the finance team.
  • Administer, prepare, develop, and monitor budgets. Monitors payroll, accounting transaction functions, audits, and the production of financial reports.
  • Develop and manage the annual budget process for multiple entities.
  • Responsible for the implementation of the accounting system or the upgrade of the accounting system. Responsible for ensuring the accounting system is accurate, efficient and in accordance with professional accounting practices and regulations.
  • Direct and coordinate financial planning, budgeting, development of systems, and preparation of financial performance statements. Develop financial records/reports and investment/risk management portfolios.
  • Work with the Board Treasurer to develop and prepare financial reports for board and special meetings.
  • Establish standards of service, quality and process improvement for assigned functions. Establish annual objectives for subordinate managers and staff and appraises performance and professional growth.
  • Coordinate and participate in organizational reviews, evaluations, assessments and audits and timely submission of compliance plans and responses, providing recommendations for and developing internal auditing and remedial measures in a timely manner when necessary.
  • Schedule and coordinate all activities related to timely submission of the annual indirect cost proposal.
  • Devise, where necessary, and implement internal controls to ensure accuracy of recording and reporting functions and to minimize risk, liability and loss.
  • Prepare and/or review budget proposals and justifications to ensure proper procedures for submission.
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting in required formats for all grants, contracts and MOA's and MOU's as required.
  • Develop and participate in the review and approval of policies and procedures governing day-to-day operations.
  • Attend regular and, upon request, special meetings of the governing board as requested by the CEO.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position and as directed by the CEO

Education and Experience:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of applicable Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Auditing Financial Reporting (GAAFR)
  • Knowledge of procedures and methods used to manage financial transactions, establish accounting procedures and systems to adequately account for business operations, federal and state grants, and contracts.
  • Must understand and be knowledgeable in operating and capital budgeting and indirect cost allocations.
  • Must be able to use Microsoft Office Suite including Excel.
  • Must be knowledgeable in the preparation and negotiation of the annual Indirect Cost Rate proposal
  • Requires in-depth knowledge of the external audit process.
  • Knowledge of federal and state legislation affecting corporate entities.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to communicate well with others, both orally and/or in writing, using both technical and non-technical language
  • Build and communicate complex financial reports, records and analyze financial data
  • Balance competing priorities to achieve goals and work under pressure
  • Handle confidential employee and administrative information with tact and discretion
  • Work independently with minimal guidance, take initiative and work as a team player
  • Bachelors’ degree in Accounting or a degree in a related field, such as Finance or Business Administration preferred.
  • Five years’ experience in a corporate accounting environment with three years of experience supervising staff preferred.
  • CPA preferred.

  • Requires the ability to conduct complex analyses of accounting systems, financial reports, business opportunities such as grants and capital projects, and on-going operations.
  • Requires the ability to convert financial information and outcomes into reports of findings and fiscal condition.
  • Requires the ability to plan, organize and prioritize complex and technical work processes in order to meet schedules and timelines.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
