Job description

Quad Cities Interfaith (QCI) is a nonpartisan, non-profit organization of congregations and community groups whose purpose is to build local leadership and address community issues in the Quad Cities region of Illinois and Iowa. QCI strives to improve the quality of life in our region by developing community leadership in congregations and other institutions, so as to bring our values into public dialogue, and work together to speak with a strong, unified voice in the decisions that affect our lives.

The job description of the Executive Director, in general, is to assure the success of Quad Cities Interfaith as a powerful and effective organization in the Quad Cities Area. The power and effectiveness are determined by the recognition and response the organization receives from local community institutions as well as major political and corporate entities in the Quad Cities and the States of Iowa and Illinois.

The Executive Director’s position should demonstrate the following skills and abilities:

1. Ability to work through complex issues, seeking “win-win” resolutions

2. Strong interpersonal and communication skills

3. Ability to build strong relationships and alliances

4. Service-minded approach to conducting business

5. Ability to multi-task and keep several initiatives moving in parallel

6. Ability to work with confidential information and within the highest ethical standards

7. Technically proficient (PC, Internet searches, email, Excel PowerPoint, Word, etc...)

The Executive Director must be willing to assume full responsibility for:

Organizational Membership:

1. Develops working relationships with key leaders of neighborhood institutions and religious congregations in the community.

2. Develops a plan to bring institutions as members into the organization (board, committees, issues).

3. Hires and fires personnel and staff

4. Works with institutions on their own development.

5. Gets commitment of dues from member institutions.

6. Organizes powerful annual conventions that expand membership, structures the organization, affirms an action agenda and provides major recognition for the organization.

Leadership Development:

1. Conducts one-on-one conversations with old and new leaders to explore and understand their self-interests.

2. Confidently challenges, agitates, creates tension in leaders that is focused on their development.

3. Initiates relationships with new potential institutional leaders and is able to draw them into the organization.

4. Challenges leaders around responsibility and role in organization.

5. Effectively challenges leaders to attend leadership training.

6. Develops and implements on-going leadership training and specific skill training for organizational leaders (new and experienced).

7. Creates opportunities for perceivable growth and change in leaders.

Issue Agenda:

1. Identifies and develops issue campaigns that will build leadership, build the organization, are winnable, concrete, and fairly short-term, will challenge leaders to work collectively, and are tied to a bigger picture.

2. As a strategic thinker, consistently exhibits the ability to think through a variety of approaches to an issue and can foresee the possible results.

3. Challenges leaders to understand their self-interest and the self-interest of others.

Action Agenda:

1. Challenges leaders to take action on identified issues.

2. Develops effective strategies for actions.

3. Evaluates actions as a strategy for learning and to assess success and failure.

4. Is committed to on-going action to build the organization.

Effective meetings:

1. Plans and implements effective meetings (from committees to public meetings).

2. Projects desired results, develops and implements strategic plans to assure those results.

3. Prepares leaders for their roles.

Staff:

1. Meets with staff on a regular basis.

2. Supervises all staff effectively and shows concern for their development.

3. Collaborates, challenges and co-operates with staff.

4. Hires, fires and evaluates all staff.

5. Recruits and develops talented organizers.

With the QCI Board of Directors, the Executive Director shares responsibility that the following be carried out:

Fund-raising - Corporate and Foundation:

1. Develops annual proposal and budget for fund-raising.

2. With leadership, seeks support from corporations and foundations (success = what is projected vs. what is raised).

Administration:

1. Administers the funds responsibly and stays within the board approved budget.

2. Assures that all administrative duties are handled properly.

3. Assures timely reports to governing bodies and funding sources.

Public Relations:

1. Effectively takes advantage of opportunities to project the work of the organization in a clear and powerful way.

2. With leaders, develops and maintains good relationships with key power people in the community and the City that creates opportunities for the organization.

Planning for the Organization:

1. Develops year-long plan for the organization that includes: expansion of membership, fund-raising, leadership development, issue and action agenda, staff development and bi-annual convention.

Board of Directors:

1. Recognizes and respects the Board and its leadership.

2. Plans and implements good Board retreats to develop long range plan.

3. Assures regular and well-organized meetings of the Board and Board Committees.

4. Assures adherence to the By-Laws, Personnel Policies, and policies set by the Board of Directors of the organization.

Accountability:

1. Conducts regular accountability meetings with the QCI Executive Committee.

2. Writes well thought-out weekly reports based on action plan in order to assess whether or not he/she is meeting his/her month-to-month goals.

3. Reads and reflects and plans in a disciplined manner.

The Executive Director of Quad Cities Interfaith is hired by the Executive Committee of QCI Board of Directors. The Board of Directors has been hired to assure accountability in order to meet QCI’s goals and objectives.

In order to effectively evaluate the Executive Director, it is imperative to have him/her quantifiably report on each area to be evaluated in order to compare the previous year with the present year and to the organizational plan for the current year.
