POSITION DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

Environmental Department Assistant is to assist the Environmental Technicians in maintaining compliance with all environmental regulations and other similar duties.

Essential Functions

• Collect water samples from raw, semi-processed, or processed water, industrial wastewater, or water from other sources to assess pollution problems.
• Assisting in cleaning of possible spills of waste products
• Removal and installation of remediation pads and booms in a creek
• Assisting in the operation and maintenance of large wastewater treatment systems
• Assisting in the collection environmental samples
• Install and maintain data collection instrumentation.
• Operate light and heavy equipment including, but not limited to, pumps, vacuum, equipment, oil spill boom, generators, and bobcats.
• Set up equipment or stations to monitor and collect pollutants from sites, such as smokestacks, or mechanical equipment.
• Daily operation and maintenance of the plant’s three wastewater treatment systems (filter bag changes, backwash procedures, carbon changes, system repairs, housekeeping).
• Collection of samples for permit compliance, waste disposal, and sewage discharge.
• Process and dispose of non-hazardous and hazardous waste produced on site.
• Ability to prioritize time-critical assignments.

Knowledge, Skills & Competencies

• Strong organizational and time management skills with attention to detail.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with many levels of management, outside regulators, and contractors.
• Experience operating fork trucks is a plus.
• Working knowledge of the operation of hand and small power tools.

Education and Experience

• Exposure to practical application in field experience preferred.

Preferred Education / Experience

• One to two years prior field experience preferred.
• HAZWOPER 24-Hour (desirable)

Physical Job Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, bend, and stoop. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand. The employee must frequently lift or move objects up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move objects up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.

May need a high level of concentration in a busy area.

Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Working Conditions

Monday through Friday and on-call may be required.
