Job Summary
Under the direction of the Director of Engineering, will perform all types of engineering related tasks including, but not limited to, topographic surveying, construction staking, paving inspection, computer database input, quantity measurement and calculations, collecting traffic volumes, collecting and logging road department infrastructure information, and updating annual resurfacing inventory maps.
This 4 month internship begins May 1st and ends September 1st with flexibility depending on semester end and start date.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Construction Inspection: Field inspection of work by private contractors on construction projects for roads and/or bridges. Oversee and assure quality work per the plans and proposal designed in accordance with applicable specifications. Responsibilities include taking measurements, preparing quantity estimates, data collection and documentation such as the preparation of inspector daily reports and other engineering related reports.
- Traffic Data Collection and Analysis: Field set up, monitoring, and data retrieval, as well as manipulation, recording, and report generation of the data.
- Engineering Design and Plan Preparation: Assist in the design and preparation of plans, proposals, estimates, and specifications.
- Asset Management data collection: Assist in the collection of data for various assets such as culverts, guardrail, pavement marking, signs, etc., as needed.
Qualifications
- A High School diploma or equivalent is required. Civil engineering coursework, computer proficiency, and land survey methods experience preferred.
- A valid Michigan Operator's License and the ability to safely operate passenger car and pickup type vehicles in the course of employment are required.
- Must be willing to work from dawn to dusk, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- A strong work ethic, willingness to learn, and self-motivation are critical for success in this position.
- Experience working with the public and the ability to communicate well with others is required.
- Computer database input experience strongly desired.
- Mental ability to frequently multi-task and handle pressure related to meeting deadlines.
- Excellent organizational, concentration and attention-to-detail skills.
- This position requires working in the office and in the field on construction projects.
- Normal office environment with occasional discomfort due to heat, dust, noise and the like.
- Sitting, standing, bending, squatting, and walking for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to lift/push/pull/carry items in excess of 50 pounds.
- Working on roadways, construction sites, and around heavy construction equipment.
- Must be able to walk on various types of terrain and work outside in all types of weather.
- Must be able to drive construction stakes with an eight-pound sledge hammer.
- Exposure to hot asphalt and diesel engine fumes.
