The EMS (Emergency Services) Charge Coder is responsible for evaluating chart documentation to ensure completeness and accuracy to effectively determine the appropriate charges to apply to patient accounts. This includes utilizing defined Evaluation and Management criteria to determine the appropriate visit level code. During the review of chart documentation, the EMS Charge Coder will also capture CPT procedure codes when appropriate, utilizing CPT coding guidelines and will append modifiers as needed.

• Enters charges into EPIC RCM for patients seen in the ED or UC by the next business day or by department deadlines.
• Consistently meets the department specific standards for quality of 95% or better.
• Consistently codes a minimum of 100 to 150 records per day (minimum of 13 to 19 an hour) to ensure all charges are entered into system or other quantity standard as defined.
• Reviews all charges for completeness and accuracy to minimize claim denials.
• Based on HIPAA guidelines, protects and maintains confidentiality of patient information, as well as, Charge Code Definitions.
• Evaluates chart documentation to ensure diagnostic and procedural codes accurately reflect the care provided to our patients during their ED/UC visit.
• Researches CPT and ICD-10 coding discrepancies for compliance and reimbursement accuracy.
• Reviews chart documentation to appropriately identify and apply charge codes for services rendered up to and including Critical Care and/or Trauma services.
• Performs charge reconciliations to ensure all charges are being captured.
• Assists the coding and billing staff with coding questions.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
- Coding credential or HIM credential preferred.
- Experience with hospital coding (rather than professional coding), is preferred.
- Experience working NCCI CPT coding edits, is preferred.
- Previous EPIC or charge coding experience preferred.
- Pediatric coding and billing a plus.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities and deadlines.
- Analytical and organizational skills a must for analyzing clinical information and data.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills required with ability to work with physicians and other caregivers regarding coding issues.
- Maintains positive and optimistic outlook and attitude to promote a one team environment.
- Must be receptive to feedback, willing to learn, flexible with change, and embrace continuous improvement.
- Maintains updated knowledge of coding requirements; including continuing education and certification renewal.
