Job description

The Director of Pharmacy is responsible for leading the daily and administrative functions of Pharmacy services. This position provides direction and leadership to ensure GVHC delivers great patient care and improved population health within an efficient cost structure. The responsibilities include overseeing daily operations, management of staff and resources, project management, quality improvement, budgeting, maintaining compliance with all policies, procedures, accreditation requirements and regulations, and medication safety. This role supervises the Pharmacy Manager, Pharmacist In Charge and other related pharmacy.

Schedule is Monday – Friday, working from 8:00am – 5:00pm.

Compensation: $177,611.20 - $186,492.80 Salary

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for leading, directing, and managing Pharmacy Manager, Pharmacists and Pharmacist In Charge performance and ensuring team member engagement.
  • Hire and provide supervision and development opportunities for pharmacy staff by training, mentoring; assigning duties; establishing performance expectations and conducting regular performance evaluations.
  • Ensures proper pharmacy practice including but not limited to monitoring/evaluating/implementing prescription drug orders, dispensing prescription drug and device orders, educating patients on the proper use or delivery of medication, providing immunizations, completing drug regimen reviews, providing patient counseling, and medication therapy management.
  • Responsible for opening, licensing, contracting and any other applicable steps in new pharmacies implementation.
  • Designs and implements new pharmacy workflows, quality improvement changes to operations, and continuous quality assurance initiatives to advance the organization’s medication-use systems and promote optimal patient outcomes.
  • Tracks and evaluates assigned pharmacy programs for operational, quality, and financial efficiency and routinely benchmarks against local and national best practices.
  • Coordinates and oversees the pharmacy operations, direct patient care programs, medication utilization and case management systems within assigned services and care areas to assure drug utilization activities are aligned with patient care needs, evidence-based best practices, and regulatory standards.
  • Drives financial performance by ensuring that facility budgeted goals are achieved; developing, reviewing, and monitoring plans to correct deficiencies in financial performance; and providing guidance and analysis of volume trends and operational needs to ensure budgets meets future expectations.
  • In consultation with stakeholders is responsible for development, review and updates of the pharmacy policies.
  • Monitors and complies with 340B compliance regulations, operating procedures and audits.
  • Oversee all state and federal regulatory audits, visits, and communication including State Board of Pharmacy inspections.
  • Facilitates staff meetings and other meetings/training as needed.
  • Responsible for driving overall compliance and business results of the pharmacy.
  • Conduct regular quality assurance checks to ensure compliance with pharmacy standards and regulations.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable state, federal, and local laws, regulations, and company policies.
  • Oversee and conduct physical inventory as needed.
  • Back up Pharmacy Manager, Pharmacist In Charge or Staff Pharmacist duties/coverage as needed.
  • Works collaboratively with clinical and operation teams.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

Lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and push 100 pounds on wheels. Specific vision abilities include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. High manual dexterity.  Reach above shoulder level, bend, squat, sit, stand, stoop, crouch, reach, kneel, twist/turn, and good finger sensation.  Hearing adequate for phone work and clear speech for staff and patient communication.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is usually average.

Education/Experience Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to take the vision of outpatient pharmacy services and develop a service line that supports our patients as well as providers, and provide leadership to the full scope of Pharmacy services.
  • Ability to successfully interact with patients, members of their support system, and staff.
  • Ability to use electronic health records and pharmacy management software.
  • Interact collaboratively with medical care team and other staff members.
  • Collect data and participate in relevant reporting processes.
  • Knowledge of 340B program administration preferred.
  • Valid California driver’s license, vehicle insurance, acceptable driving record and reliable transportation.

Education/Experience

  • Graduate of an ACPE accredited college of Pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and unrestricted California pharmacist license.
  • Minimum five years of experience managing a pharmacy, seven years preferred.
  • Minimum three years of experience directly supervising pharmacy staff, five years preferred; with formal leadership training and supervisory experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience leading operational activities, including but not limited to successfully and independently increasing fill volume, spearheading problem resolution, strategically maximizing revenue and productivity, designing and implementing workflow solutions, overseeing licensure and regulatory requirements, and managing insurance compliance.
  • Must have experience in policy/procedure development as well as the ability and initiative to expand services effectively to meet the needs of our population.
  • Previous high volume retail pharmacy experience.
  • Current American Heart Association” BLS for Healthcare Providers” certification.
