Function:

The Director ofPeople & Culture (Human Resources) is the guardian and champion of Stephens College culture and is responsible for and lead all aspects of Human Resources for Stephens College including developing strategies to ensure that HR initiatives and programs such as recruitment, onboarding, team-building and recognition, professional development, performance management, and employee benefits  - along with other College initiatives that echo and embed into the College's culture, values, and purpose into our daily operations. The Director will also draft policies and develop metrics that track employee engagement and productivity. 

Reports To: Vice President for Finance and Administration


Responsibilities:

Employee Recruitment:

  • Proactively manage resource allocations and maintain a competitive approach to recruiting and assimilating high-potential talent. Advise on people programs and processes to enhance talent attraction, retention, development, and succession.
  • In coordination with Human Resources Partner and hiring managers, develop a recruiting strategy that meets current and future needs. 
  • Serve as a strategic adviser to Senior Staff and other members of the management team primarily related to talent, organizational performance, and culture. 

Employee Benefits:

  • Administers all College benefit programs.
  • Recommends changes and adjustments to benefit plans.
  • Interact with vendors and external partners to create and maintain relationships and negotiate contracts.
  • Develops and maintains positive working relations and communication with benefit vendors, brokers, and consultants.

Employee Policies and Procedures:

  • Gain an understanding of the organization and participate fully in many strategic deliberations and provide insightful thinking and problem solving on critical HR issues.
  • Help build a culture of teamwork, accountability, openness, collaboration, and growth.
  • Maintains official College-wide policy and procedure manual.
  • Ensures policies and procedures follow federal and state law and regulations.
  • Participates in hearings and investigations, as necessary.
  • Serves as the College's Equal Employment Opportunity Employment officer.

Employee Relations:

  • Develop comprehensive approaches to employee development, retention, and onboarding.
  • Counsel, coach and guide managers and staff in addressing concerns and complaints.
  • Provide HR guidance on special projects, HR analytics & reporting, talent reviews, training, change management, organizational design, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Develop relationships with the employees and become someone who is sought for advice and counsel on HR, cultural, and organizational issues. Facilitate integration of diverse workgroups and cultures.
  • Coach and mentor and develop leadership bench.
  • Mediate employee relations and performance issues and provide counsel on appropriate methods of performance management.
  • Serves as ex officio member of Staff Advisory Council.
  • Coordinates and serves as member of employee recognition planning committee.
  • Directs and coordinates the actions surrounding employee separations.

Leadership and Supervision:

  • Role models and demonstrates leadership consistently with all team members across all levels.
  • Provides leadership to the staff in the People Operations Department (Human Resources).
  • Oversees graduate and student workers.
  • Oversee employee payroll and related compliance and reporting by providing guidance and supervision for the Human      Resources Benefit Partner (Payroll and Benefits)

  • Work requires:
  • Ability to lift/carry and push/pull a minimum of 15 lbs.
  • Keying on a computer repeatedly during an 8-hour shift.
  • Reaching/handling of various office equipment repeatedly during an 8-hour shift.
  • Stoop/kneel to file.

Requirements

Education, Experience, and Skill Requirements (or Qualifications):

  • Bachelor's degree or higher preferred with 7 + years of relevant experience with at least 5 years of experience in leadership role. Certification in HR a plus. (Master's degree preferred). 
  • Broad generalist background including coaching and counseling, performance management, employee involvement, teambuilding, as well as compensation and benefits. 
  • Self-Starter who is comfortable working across teams and functions, able to drive focus, collaborative inputs, and agreement to plan.
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks and projects, prioritizing critical work and being accountable for results.
  • Clear communication skills that can be effectively articulated in both written and oral forms across a diverse audience base. 
  • Ability to lead and engage multifunctional teams with focus on delivering results.
  • Creative problem solver who can incorporate new learnings into existing plans and act decisively and independently. Intellectual curiosity and rigorous analytical experience.
  • Technology driven with both an understanding and desire to use technology to increase efficiency.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Be a key driver of teamwork and a positive culture within the organization.
