Job Summary

TRIO Precollege Programs (Educational Talent Search and Upward Bound) is currently seeking a Residential Director to oversee six (6) Residential Counselors and supervise 60 high school students in the TRIO Precollege Summer Academy. This is a 6-week summer, residential pre-college academic/educational support program. TRIO Programs Residential Staff are responsible for leading all afternoon activities including study hall, athletics, and cultural/creative workshops. The Residential Director and counselors assist in special events and field trips. Additionally, staff are present in the dorms and at meals. Counselors are assigned a small group of students whom they meet with for activities and mentorship regularly. Counselors will perform night duty shifts on a rotating basis. Candidates must be highly motivated, patient, and energetic. This position is residential 5 nights per week for 6 weeks.

Essential Functions

The position requires living in the residence hall during the summer and has the following responsibilities:

  • Assist with Move-In/Move-Out day procedures for all summer program participants, including dorm room walk-through to assess damages & repairs.
  • Responsible for UB students' and staff's safety and security in the residence halls.
  • Supervise Resident Advisors and students, on campus and during trips, in addition to establishing rapport with those assigned to your residence hall (approximately 6 RAs & approximately 60 students).
  • Actively participate in all activities.
  • Plan and implement scheduled evening activities.
  • Evaluate RAs' job performance twice during the summer in addition to mentoring and addressing/correcting issues.
  • Evaluate students' progress throughout the summer.
  • Enforce residence hall and program rules consistently.
  • Attend, participate during, or lead Residence Hall Staff meetings.
  • Report any serious infractions regarding drugs, alcohol, or sexual misconduct immediately to Administrative Staff.
  • Accompany students to the health clinic, doctor, or emergency room as needed.
  • Ensure that RAs complete all responsibilities including required duties throughout the day and after curfew.
  • Work under the supervision of Administrative Staff.
  • Complete all paperwork in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Set the example for the TRIO Programs with a positive attitude and excellent behavior.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • All Residential Staff must assist in the monitoring & supervision of student participants in the culminating activity (College Tour) during the 6th week of the summer program.

Compensation Includes: A single room within a suite a campus dining plan during the Summer program and a stipend

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Graduate School student preferred
  • Prior experience in residence life preferred
  • Candidate must possess excellent supervisory, communication, tutorial, and leadership skills and have experience with recordkeeping, time-management, and organizational skills.
  • Experience with high school population and residence living is recommended.
  • Candidates must be time-oriented; able to adhere to a strict schedule and to follow all rules & regulations.
  • Must have the ability to practice critical and creative thinking.
  • In addition, must be energetic, friendly, sociable, enthusiastic, and fully committed to the six-week program.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
