Job description

ABOUT CORPSAFRICA
Founded in 2011, CorpsAfrica provides the opportunity for Africans to serve in their own countries, along the lines of the Peace Corps model. We train college-educated young Africans and send them to live for up to one year in rural, high-poverty communities to facilitate small-scale, high-impact projects that are identified by local people. CorpsAfrica aims to create a culture of public service in Africa by giving participants the opportunity to apply their education, skills and energy toward helping their fellow citizens overcome extreme poverty. www.corpsafrica.org
WHAT YOU'LL DO
At this moment of tremendous growth and opportunity, we are making significant investments in our infrastructure, including standing up a robust development function. Working closely with the Chief Development Officer (CDO), the Director of Development is a new position that will lead the acquisition and development of major donors, supervise a growing team, and oversee the smooth operations of the department. Specifically, the Director of Development will:
  • In partnership with the CDO, develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy, with ambitious goals to increase revenue and a focus on building out a robust individual and major giving program.
  • Develop and grow a portfolio of donors with the capacity to make 5-7 figure gifts, leveraging the CEO, staff, and board in donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Develop donor-specific strategies and serve as the primary point of contact for donors.
  • Lead the research, qualification, and management of a robust pipeline of donor prospects. Perform due diligence, conduct outreach, and design cultivation tactics that reflect an understanding of the prospect’s interests and fit with CorpsAfrica’s mission.
  • Oversee the creation and execution of donor-facing events, including house parties, regional gatherings, donor trips to the field, and in 2026, our first gala.
  • Build out and supervise a growing team of Development professionals, guiding and supporting team members to achieve their individual and collective fundraising targets.
  • Oversee seamless day-to-day department operations, inclusive of high Salesforce utilization and consistent and scalable processes for donor data and moves management tracking, pipeline management, and reporting. Ensure that donor recognition and stewardship is conducted in a timely manner.
  • In collaboration with the Communications Manager, oversee the creation of compelling written and online appeals, pitch decks, reports, annual report, and other donor-facing materials that enable donors to understand the impact of their donations.
  • Support the Grants Manager to research funding opportunities, craft effective grants and proposals, and manage grant awards. Assist in budget development, tracking, and financial reporting as needed.
  • Support strategies to engage corporate partners through build-building, sponsorships, workplace giving campaigns, and other mutually beneficial activities.

WHO YOU ARE

  • An enthusiastic advocate for CorpsAfrica's mission and values. You are inspired to grow a successful program that recruits and trains young volunteers to serve in their own countries. You thrive on a multicultural team that values collaboration, listening and capacity building, monitoring and evaluating, accountability and transparency and – above all – a commitment to locals helping locals.
  • A versatile development professional with a track record in securing large gifts. You bring at least 10 years of professional experience in multiple areas of fundraising, with a focus on individual major giving and raising 5-7M+ gifts. You enjoy the donor-facing and behind-the-scenes operational aspects of fundraising.
  • A “big picture” thinker with the ability to implement tactically. You bring a strategic mindset to fundraising and are hands-on in translating strategy into tangible activities. You are systems-oriented with experience creating processes and workflows for development operations. You take initiative and run with new ideas that advance strategic goals.
  • A thoughtful relationship builder who develops rapport easily and fosters trust. You have a warm, energetic, and authentic personality that translates to building lasting and mutually beneficial relationships with a range of personalities. You are a natural networker with the ability to deepen existing relationships and develop new ones.
  • A compelling writer, presenter, and communicator. You are skilled in analyzing, breaking down, and communicating ideas in ways that inspire others to action. You leverage data and stories to create narratives that articulate the “why” behind an organization’s mission and impact. Proposal writing experience is required.
  • A people manager who leverages individuals’ strengths and fosters collaboration. You have experience in hiring, supervising, and motivating staff, as well as organizing and directing teams, setting priorities and timelines, and meeting set milestones and goals. You foster collaboration and a shared sense of accountability.
  • A well-organized and tech-savvy project manager. You are a self-starter with excellent time management skills with the ability to stay focused and nimble in a dynamic environment. You are proficient in donor relationship management and utilize technology to track data for the full donor lifecycle. Salesforce experience is required.
