The Organization of American Historians (OAH) is a unit at Indiana University in the College of Arts and Sciences (The College). Founded in 1907, OAH is the largest professional society dedicated to the teaching and study of American history. The mission of the organization is to promote excellence in the scholarship, teaching, and presentation of American history, and to encourage wide discussion of historical questions and the equitable treatment of all practitioners of history.
The OAH represents more than 7,000 historians working in the U.S. and abroad. OAH members include college and university professors, precollegiate teachers, archivists, museum curators, public historians, students, and a variety of professional historians and scholars employed in government and the private sector.

Job Summary
This is a department director position within the Organization of American Historians (OAMH) responsible for developing and implementing an organization-wide Communications and Marketing strategy for internal and external stakeholders. The position will focus on all aspects of Communications and Marketing at OAMH and in support of the organization's mission, programs, and publications.
Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Design and implement organization-wide communications plans and media relations strategies to increase outreach to key audiences and stakeholders.
  • Develop key messaging for web/digital, media, development and fundraising, and membership programs that effectively describes OAH's mission, goals, and differentiating value propositions (DVPs).
  • Create and oversee a content and editorial calendar that aligns with communication strategies, tactics, and organizational milestones and events.
  • Develop and manage dissemination of compelling and engaging website and social media content.
  • Develop targeted messaging for advancement initiatives to engage internal and external stakeholders; develop messaging and materials that serve to develop strategic institutional partnerships.
  • Create, write copy for, and/or edit content for related marketing collateral.
  • Handle day-to-day media relations activities with broadcast, print, and digital outlets, both proactive and responsive; cultivate and manage relationships with reporters and other media influencers.
  • Write press releases and media advisories.
General Responsibilities
  • Independently creates basic and complex communications for print and e-distribution on behalf of department or functional area within department and in support of departmental goals and objectives; communications may be interdepartmental; staff, faculty, or student-focused; or external.
  • Responds to inquiries and requests and explains policies, procedures, and context of Communications.
  • Manages relationships with various internal and external stakeholders and creates communications coverage for relevant initiatives, events, and programs.
  • Prepares communications timelines and shares progress of Communications toward relevant deadlines with manager, team members, and other relevant constituents.
  • Regularly monitors relevant social media and news sites; researches relevant subject matter to increase knowledge in area(s) of specialty.
  • Utilizes various communications software programs and delivers communications in multiple formats to a variety of audiences.
  • May provide guidance to lower-level Communications Generalists.

EDUCATION
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, public relations, or related field

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

$48,000-$55,000 Annually
