THE POSITION

The Pennsylvania Public School Employees' Retirement System (PSERS) needs a self-motivated, collaborative professional working in this capacity to provide these critical services to PSERS' internal management, executive team, and its board of trustees.
A successful candidate will have the following attributes: highly competent; detail-oriented; possesses moderate communications experience in supporting an organization's public relations program; ability to juggle multiple priorities; demonstratable excellence in written, oral, and digital communications; and experience working closely with many individuals at all levels across an organization.
The Pennsylvania Public School Employees' Retirement System (PSERS, www.psers.pa.gov), is an agency in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania that administers a pension plan and defined contribution plan for Pennsylvania's public-school employees. The System serves over a half million members with a current pension fund of approximately $70 billion. This position will play a key role in ensuring that PSERS communications and public relations programs are among the best!
PSERS is located in Harrisburg, PA, a mid-size city situated along the Susquehanna River. The Harrisburg area is affordable and near many attractions including Hershey, and it is only two hours from major cities and airports like Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington D.C.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This position will report directly to the Public School Employees' Retirement System's (PSERS) Communications Office Director. This position works with a small team of professionals providing support for both internal and external communications consistent with PSERS' communications strategy and public relations program. In this capacity, the position updates, communicates, and coordinates distribution of information regarding PSERS to its members, Board, and others. The position writes, edits, prepares, coordinates, and distributes informational materials which depict and explain the activities of PSERS. Materials include manuals, booklets, pamphlets, newsletters, letters, multimedia (including video/photo), emails PSERS' electronic business bulletin, materials for PSERS' Internet, Intranet sites, and social media accounts. This ensures that up-to-date information is available to agency staff, members of the system, employers, and others interested in PSERS activities. The position also assists the Communications Office with writing content for the department's website, publications, news releases, presentations, social media content and other materials.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: This position is telework eligible, dependent on operational and executive leadership requirements. All teleworking must occur within Pennsylvania.In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • Four years of experience in preparing public relations promotion through all media; and a bachelor's degree with major course work in journalism, communications, English, or a related field; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Additional Requirements:
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Preferred Qualifications (not required):
  • One year of experience in preparing public relations promotion through all media for a public pension fund or other public entity.
