SUMMARY

The Dean of Student Life works collaboratively with key internal partners to promote a positive, nurturing, and healthy school culture rooted in the Holy Child mission, goals, and philosophy. This role oversees all student discipline and character development of the students of Mayfield Junior School by creating programs and systems that support students’ social/emotional growth, align with restorative practices, and encourage student leadership and voice.

 

The Dean of Student Life, the Lower and Middle School Directors and Dean of Academic Life, are members of the Whole Child Leadership Team (WCLT). Together the WCLT is tasked with promoting the mission, goals, and philosophy of the school.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Behavior & Restorative Practices

  • Communicate clear and consistent school wide expectations and processes for behavior management aligned with our Holy Child approach, restorative practices, and DEIJ best practices. 
  • Oversee day-to-day disciplinary issues K-8, working closely with advisors, faculty, and division directors, as outlined in our behavior management framework. This will involve addressing more immediate situations, meeting with students and mediating situations, supporting teachers, consulting with division directors, creating behavior plans for students, prompt parent communication, and following up on situations (days, weeks, or months later).
  • Provide team leaders, advisors, and teachers with support/training in implementing the Holy Child approach to behavior management.
  • Attend Student Support Team meetings, grade-level meetings (as needed), and Team Leader meetings in support of Student needs and clear communication.
  • Partner with learning specialists and school counselors in student support needs and behavior/support plans.
  • Maintain systems for documentation and communication between WCLT, advisors, team leaders, teachers, students, and parents regarding student behavior situations as they occur and with follow-up, once a situation has been resolved. Special emphasis should be placed on follow-ups with parents, advisors, students, or grade-level teams, to ensure that communication and student needs are well supported.
  • Review class rosters and student schedules paying special attention to group dynamics and balanced groupings.
  • Review the Student/Parent Handbook and Employee Handbook each year to ensure an accurate explanation of current school policies and practices related to Student Life and discipline.

 

Student Life

  • Plan and maintain the K-8 school calendar as it relates to student activities by adding all events to ensure proactive communication and advanced planning.
  • Lead and create the parameters and structure of the Middle School Advisory Program and design details with support and planning from Team Leaders.
  • In partnership with the Dean of Academic Life, create special schedules in preparation for assemblies, special events, and other needs.
  • Oversee non-prayer portions of daily school-wide Morning Prayer, including special guests or guest speakers, while working closely with the Campus Minister and others as needed.
  • Oversee and plan cross-grade level activities and assemblies in collaboration with Division Directors, Team Leaders, other departments, and/or parent leaders (e.g. Mosaic Month, Heritage Festival). 
  • Lead and oversee Mustang Meetings for Lower and Middle Schools to engage positively with students and empower student voice and leadership.
  • Coordinate and communicate plans for middle school dances.
  • Assist the division directors in the creation and management of Student transitional events like the Mustang Welcome Camp for rising 5th-grade students and new student orientation.
  • Oversee and manage the established duty/supervision schedule (including Rainy Day/Extreme Heat schedules) in the day-to-day activities and operations. Consults with members of WCLT and the front office receptionist as needed.

 

Other Responsibilities

  • Is visible and present on the school campus and at school activities 
  • With the Dean of Academic Life, division directors, and teachers;  plan the logistics and plans for school-sponsored field trips, overnight trips, and chaperones as needed.
  • Performs any other job-related tasks deemed necessary and/or assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experienced educator with a preferred Master's Degree or equivalent in Education or a related field. 
  • 5 years or more experience in elementary and middle school education, ideally in an independent school

The employee must frequently lift or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: 

While performing the duties of this job the employee works in an environment where the noise level is usually moderate and constant distractions due to constant foot traffic, phones ringing, and people talking
