Established in 1925, The Claremont Colleges includes five undergraduate liberal arts colleges and two graduate institutions: Pomona College, Claremont Graduate Institution, Scripps College, Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, Pitzer College and Keck Graduate Institute. POSITION OVERVIEW
Claremont Graduate University is seeking an innovative, collaborative, and visionary leader with a demonstrated record of elevating the student experience and enhancing an environment of success and belonging. This role serves the interests of a diverse graduate student body, including international students, veterans, and adult learners. The Associate Director of Student Life and International Services joins an engaged team that is committed to serving graduate students through online and in-person modalities and across a broad range of masters degrees and traditional and professional doctorate degrees.
Under the supervision of the Director of Student Life and International Services, the Associate Director of Student Life provides support in the training, collaboration, advising, and supervising of Student Life, Diversity and Leadership registered student organizations and events. The SLDL Office works closely with affinity groups, the IGNITE Mentoring Program, Graduate Student Council, International students, and student Veterans. The Associate Director coordinates student support for international students, particularly regarding the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) and Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) through information dissemination and advising on visa compliance matters. The Associate Director and SLDL staff coordinate New International Student and Scholar Orientation (NISSO) in support of Student engagement on campus and within the community. This position advances the University mission and strategic plan by recruiting, retaining, and supporting the academic success of Claremont Graduate University students.
The Associate Director provides support to all aspects of developing a strategy, planning and coordinating diverse and inclusive, equity and social justice initiatives in consultation with the Director of Student Life and International Students. The Associate Director teaches best practices and enforces CGU policies and procedures.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential Job Functions
  • Serve as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for incoming students and assist the Director of Student Life and International Students with current students in maintaining the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and all related certification requirements. Under the guidelines provided by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and Department of State (DOS), organize SEVIS data and issue immigration documents and grant immigration benefits to students in F-1 visa status and J-1 visa status.
  • Support the DSO/PDSO in advising international graduate students and their dependents on maintaining lawful immigration status once in the U.S. through continuous education on regulations, policies, and procedures. Such issues may pertain to work authorization, reinstatements, reduced course load authorizations, change of status, medical leave, Curricular Practical Training or Optional Practical Training and any other issue related to lawful status in the U.S.
  • Ensure institutional compliance with federal regulations by performing timely and accurate registration and reporting of all F1 and J1 students through SEVIS.
  • Assist the Director of Student Life and International Students with communication to new and current International Students to include emergency and sickness coverage. Assist the Director of Student Life and International Students with management and enrollment of international and domestic students utilizing the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) and International Student Option (ISO) coverage. Maintain student status within People Soft, SEVIS and other student record systems, and serve as the liaison to the student health insurance provider.
  • Serve as a liaison to the Office of Student Engagement, Student Services offices, Academic Affairs offices, Admissions, International Scholars Program, Center for Writing and Rhetoric, various Claremont College offices to support the needs of matriculated international students and propose campus-wide strategies for continued growth in enrollment and community building among international students to CGU. This role requires regular communication with international student recruitment personnel.
  • Support campus wide efforts to foster community building among veteran and military students. Collaborate across student organizations and consortium partners to provide tailored programming.
  • Develop knowledge of the regulations governing veteran benefits. This role must be eligible to serve as a veteran School Certifying Official (SCO).
  • Maintain professional development on federal regulations, higher education administration, accreditation and governing agencies as it pertains to international student issues that arise.
  • Assist in the professional development of various offices within the Claremont Colleges as it relates to the mission of the SLDL Office and CGU.
  • Provide student employee supervision.
  • Program Development
  • Manage and plan co-curricular events for Student Clubs and Organizations, Graduate Student Council, and the IGNITE Mentoring Program. Facilitate workshops for mentors and mentees. Develop programming in consultation with Institutional Effectiveness. Collaborate with student success and retention efforts to assist in developing summer and auxiliary educational programs.
  • Serve on Orientation Committee, First Year Experience, and New International Student and Scholars Orientation, and other CGU and 7C Committees as needed.
  • Collaborate and support diversity, equity and inclusion programming in the SLDL office and campus wide.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist the Director of Student Life and International Students in the development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to international students and students with disabilities.
  • This position serves as a reporter for university, state, and federal regulations such as the Jeanne Clery Act, Title IX (Responsible Employee), the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), FERPA, HIPPA, ADA, and other mandates, coupled with corresponding response, training, and related requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Admissions recruitment staff and Director of International Student Recruitment on processing international student visas. Provide training across The Claremont Colleges on other topics specific to international students.
  • Participate in regular meetings with staff in the CGU Admission Office, Financial Aid, Office of Student Engagement, Dean of Students Office and Office of Student Life, Diversity and Leadership, and Academic Affairs in relation to recruitment and support of international students.
  • Availability to work some nights, weekends, or early mornings for events and to communicate with students in different time zones.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of graduate student development, identity development; experience in working with diverse communities and across multiple identities; and respect and consideration for all identities, perspectives, and differences.
  • Demonstrated experience serving as a Designated School Official and advising F-1 and J-1 students and scholars.
  • Outreach / event planning and coordination.
  • Experience working with and aptitude for learning various technologies, including data base systems; knowledge of People Soft, Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.

QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: Master's Degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration or related field or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
EXPERIENCE: Three years of progressively responsible experience in higher education administration advising international and domestic students or any combination of experience in similar settings.
Preferred Skills and Abilities: Ability to plan, implement and evaluate programs that support institutional goals; community building, human relations, and conflict resolution skills; strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to work both individually and as a part of a team; computer skills.
LICENSES / CERTIFICATES: Driver's license; passport; United States Citizen or lawful permanent resident, per the DHS guidelines regarding eligibility to be a DSO. Certifying School Official (SCO) eligible.
OTHER PREFERENCES:
HOURS: The regular hours for this position are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. Hours may vary due to needs of the university or department. This position is on site with the flexibility to work remotely up to 2 days per week with supervisor approval.
