The Position: Reporting to the IT Applications Manager, the Data & System Architect's role is to strategically design, install, monitor, maintain, and optimize production databases, implement data warehouses, data marts, and data stores. This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing database policies and procedures to ensure the integrity and availability of databases and their accompanying software, as well as defining and creating conceptual and logical data models. Additionally, evaluate and select database infrastructure components such as software, hardware, database management systems, and networking capabilities.

The ideal candidate has:
Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent field. 10 years or more hands-on work experience with SQL Server administration, SSIS/SSRS development and data visualization tools like Power BI or Tableau. Certifications in MS SQL Server are highly desired.
While these requirements are the traditional standards for developing the skills required for this classification, any combination of experience, training and education that demonstrate the ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the classification may be considered.
Knowledge Of:
  • Applicable data privacy practices and laws.
  • Database structures, theories, principles, and practices.
  • Designing, building, installing, configuring and supporting database servers, including, multi-gigabyte data warehouses.
  • Database tuning and troubleshooting.
  • Data management and data flow diagramming techniques
  • Database platforms, including MS SQL Server.
  • Relational database structures, theories, principles, and practices.
  • Data architecting, data mining, large-scale data modeling, and business requirements gathering/analysis.
  • Technical architecture and technical support documentation.
  • Network, PC, and platforms operating systems.
  • Reporting and query tools and practices.
  • Project management expertise.

Ability To:
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Conduct research into database issues, standards, and products as required.
  • Present and relay highly technical information to stakeholders that is easily understood.
  • Work independently to plan and organize work to meet timelines and objectives.
  • Prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.

What you will be doing?
Strategy & Planning
  • Assess and develop long-term strategic goals for production databases and data warehousing in conjunction with data users and owners, department managers, clients, and other key stakeholders.
  • Design and implement redundant systems, policies, and procedures for disaster recovery and data archiving to ensure effective availability, protection, and integrity of data assets.
  • Develop database architectures, coding standards, and quality assurance policies and procedures in partnership with other teams as needed.
  • Analyze system requirements for new solutions, architect appropriate data structures, data integrations and data migration plans to meet those requirements in partnership with other teams as needed.
  • Provide architectural expertise, direction, and assistance to others.

Acquisition & Deployment
  • Conduct research and make recommendations on data warehouse products, services, protocols, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts.
  • Evaluate, recommend, and select data warehouse components, including hardware, database management systems, ETL (extract, transform, load) software, data mining tools, and meta data management tools.

Operational Management & Business Intelligence
  • Work with end-users to identify, create and deliver reports according to requirements.
  • Develop routines for end-users to facilitate best practices database use, to include establishing appropriate end-user database access control levels.
  • Monitor data warehouse performance and identify inefficiencies through database transaction and security audits.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain change control and testing processes for modifications to databases or data systems.
  • Create conceptual and logical data models for new database or data warehouse development and/or changes to existing ones.
  • Prepare cost estimates associated with data migration. Plan and execute data migration.
