Job description

Position Summary:

The position has responsibility for all accounting functions, leads the development, assessment, and reporting of operating goals and objectives, and participates in developing annual and long-range business plans. The Corporate Controller has board-level visibility through active service on the APMG, MPR, and SCPR Audit Committees. The role also serves as the key contact with strategic service providers including financial institutions, the outside audit firm, and insurance broker. This position is a key business partner to the leadership team and supports the business with insightful reporting, actionable analysis, optimized control procedures and compliance.

Expected Compensation Range: $150 - $170k / annualized. Exact compensation is determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure, and internal equity.

Your Responsibility:

Management Accountabilities:

  • Provide Leadership and supervision (directly or indirectly) of all accounting staff
  • Develop, implement and evaluate accounting policies, reporting procedures and accounting controls to ensure optimal efficiency and effectiveness
  • Optimize cash management practices by developing a reliable cash forecast and managing cash to balance liquidity and return requirements. Work with banking partners to enhance cash positions as appropriate.
  • Lead accounting staff in partnership with Information Technology department to optimize financial technology architecture and functionality.
  • Lead accounting staff through annual audit, acting as primary liaison with the external auditors
  • Hire, supervise, train and manage direct staff through coaching, mentorship, performance meetings and on-going feedback. Involve HR on performance issues as needed.
  • Foster a creative and productive work environment. Create development opportunities for staff and training to enhance skills and foster growth.

Accounting and Analysis Accountabilities:

  • Lead the annual budgeting process and implementation of budgets, monitor progress and partner with internal clients to provide insightful analysis and action-oriented support.
  • Serve as the primary contact in the organization for identifying, communicating and resolving accounting issues and policies throughout the organization.
  • Ensure that all financial statements are prepared in accordance with generally accepted accounting principals and that proper internal controls are in place to support the integrity of the financial activity
  • Review monthly financial performance and provide perspective on causes and recommendation regarding performance variances
  • Communicate results to the leadership team in a way that facilitates understanding and insight.
  • Complete required filings and financial reporting requirements for the organization such as tax filing and grant requirements
  • Manage and track the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and the organization’s investment policy.
  • Lead the annual insurance renewal process and work proactively with the legal department to ensure contracts are in compliance with policy terms and limits.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting or related field
  • CPA (active or inactive) is not required but would be beneficial in this role.
  • High level of technical competency gained through 10+ years in for-profit or not-for-profit accounting
  • Experience in a management/leadership role including both staff and project management; ability to communicate and negotiate successfully with all levels of organization and outside vendors.
  • Supervisory/management experience is required.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • An MBA is not required but would be beneficial in this role
  • Experience in non-profit fund accounting is not required, but a broad range of experience in both for profit and non-profit firms is beneficial.
  • Infor Lawson general ledger experience desired.
