Job Description
Job Summary: The Superintendent coordinates operations and oversees multiple crews of workers on commercial construction sites from start to finish. They are responsible for ensuring projects are constructed timely, safely, and productively in a cost-effective manner in strict accordance with plans, specifications, and local codes. They will be cross-trained across Old Dominion Healthcare Services (ODHS), Old Dominion Specialties (ODS), and Old Dominion Firestopping (ODF), while building and maintaining relationships with customers.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the organization, work methods, scheduling, cost control, conformity with drawings and specification, workmanship, and assignment of work
- Supervise and direct overall project activities including planning, coordinating, and meeting critical project milestones.
- Ensure crew has adequate materials, manpower, and resources.
- Maintain and inventory equipment and materials
- Identify and ensure the appropriate crew is assigned to the project.
- Create and communicate schedules to crew members in a timely manner.
- Ensure the job site work area is always kept in a clean, organized, and safe manner.
- Record time and attendance accurately for crew; submit weekly timesheets by the Payroll deadline.
- Effectively manage client relationships and client satisfaction.
- Collaborate with and technically assist field personnel assigned to project.
- Follow up and follow through on time sensitive tasks and ensure all deadlines are met.
- Provide clear communication and data concerning why the company is winning or losing on a project at time of completion.
- Finds adequate labor to properly execute assigned projects.
- Lead a pre-task plan and daily huddle with the crew to proactively communicate and identify potential issues concerning safety, quality, and time impacts.
- Perform quality control duties for the work being performed.
- Communicate project logistics.
- Order the correct material approved for the project.
- Ensure the crew meets daily productivity goals.
- Complete a daily report.
- Attend regular progress meetings and speaks on behalf of the company in a professional manner; serves as an effective liaison with the client, laborers, contractors, project team and other stakeholders.
- Must be able to travel daily to the jobsite as assigned.
- Ensures equipment assigned to the project is in good working order, performing inspections as needed.
- Responsible for on-the-job training for new crew members
- Responsive to phone calls and other communications concerning assigned projects; and shares relevant information to the project team, client, leadership, and other stakeholders in an effective and timely manner.
- Perform job progress and completion punch list identification and completion
- Monitor job costing, quality reporting, forecasting, and productivity to ensure project is on schedule and within budget
- Review work in progress daily and develop job progress and look ahead schedules to ensure construction projects meet expectations
- Communicate and track change orders.
- Proactively communicate any barriers to productivity, safety, and quality to the Construction Manager.
- Assist with project logistics and field coordination
- Communicate with project team regarding logistics, including material, equipment and labor needs
- Review the project schedule weekly, identify scheduling delays, conflicts, or other issues; and communicate with the project team on ways to problem solve, catch up, and improve
- Ensure that the job site is always kept in a clean and organized manner
- Attend potential project meetings and assist with estimating and proposals
- Act as a liaison with customers, other contractors, suppliers, project management, and craft workers to ensure all required materials, equipment, and inspections support the project schedule and specifications
- Establish and maintain client relationships.
- Work with the project team, client, leadership, and other stakeholders in to clarify, discuss, and resolve issues an effective and timely manner; be responsive to phone calls and other communications concerning assigned projects.
- Maintain certifications necessary to perform duties.
- Safety responsibilities:
- Actively support a safety-first mentality ensuring OSHA compliance.
- Ensures the crew works safely, following all local, state, and federal laws and regulations and codes pertaining to the scope of work
- Maintain and update safety documentation
- Document site-specific safety requirements and safety plans
Minimum Qualifications:
- At least five (5) years of experience leading construction crews with HS diploma or GED; OR an equivalent combination of training, education and relevant work experience
- Significant knowledge of proper construction techniques, practices, procedures, and safety requirements
- Ability to effectively lead and manage teams on the job site
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and problem solve
- Demonstrated ability to read and understand construction plans and documents
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to communicate effectively and constructively with different groups working on a project, including but not limited to the customer, other contractors, project team, vendors, and laborers
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Attention to detail with a focus on error prevention
- Leadership, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills
- Must be a proactive self-starter, problem solver, and effective team player
- Ability to understand, follow, and communicate standard operating policies and procedures, and regulations
- Ability to work under time pressure and adapt to changing requirements in a positive and constructive manner
- Proficient using a computer and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)
- Valid driver’s license
- Certifications: OSHA 30, Fall Protection Training
- Ability to talk to customers about product/installation knowledge
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bilingual (English, Spanish)
- Supervisory experience
Physical Requirements include but are not limited to the following:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Able to walk, sit, stand, bend, kneel, stretch, squat and climb.
- Able to frequently travel to jobsites and meetings.
- Able to wear required personal protective equipment.
- Able to work with specialized construction equipment, tools, and materials.
- Able to see, talk and hear in person, via phone and/or through online/video.
- Able to use hands and fingers in a manner that allows for use of a keyboard and phone.
- Able to lift & carry items up to 50 lbs.
