Join us as Communications Director and be part of shaping the vibrant future of Bloomington. Duties: Directs development and implementation of the City's communications strategy.
Creates and reviews strategies and materials created by City departments or divisions to ensure professional and coordinated communications. Provides guidance and support to all departments and divisions for media relations and other communications efforts. Responds to official requests for City information in consultation with other City departments.
Assesses communications needs and perform research on a broad range of topics. Writes, edits and directs the distribution of news releases, marketing materials, and public service announcements. Identifies new opportunities for communicating City messages to the various interest groups.
Identifies and organizes news conferences. Oversees the scheduling, production, and management of all audio and visual recording of events for City purposes. Develops and maintains positive relationships with members of the local media.
Leads City emergency communications planning. Develops talking points for mayoral appearances. Participates in drafting speeches, guest columns, and other presentations.
Serves as spokesperson for the Mayor and City, as needed. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Education and Experience - Minimum knowledge equivalent to a bachelor's degree in communication, journalism, telecommunications or related field. Minimum experience equivalent to three years.
Other - Knowledge of communications, graphic design, and marketing principles. Available after hours for emergencies or other critical needs, as necessary. Additional Information Schedule: 8:00am - 5:00pm, Monday - Friday and other times as needed.
Evening/weekend hours sometimes required. Salary: $65,187-$84,360 This position is appointed by the Mayor. Benefits: Currently this position allows for teleworking part of the week.
Eligible employees receive 13 paid holidays per year. They may earn up to 4 weeks (160 hours) of Paid Time Off in their first year of employment and 5 weeks (200 hours) in their second calendar year of employment. The City contributes 14.2% of a regular employee's salary to their retirement fund through the Indiana Public Retirement System (INPRS).
Employees may contribute pre-taxed dollars to a 457(b) Deferred Compensation Plan account to supplement their retirement earnings. The City will contribute double the amount of the employee's 457(b) contribution to a 401(a) account up to $30 per pay. Health, vision, and dental insurance premiums are subsidized by the City and are available on day one of employment to regular employees.
Employees may elect the High Deductible Insurance plan with the City providing an HSA contribution and if the employee is a non-smoker or participating in the Tobacco Cessation program, the employee only plan is at no cost to the employee. Employees and their dependents (ages 3 and up) who are on the City's health insurance plan may utilize the City's Employee Health Clinic. Employees may receive over $2,400 per year in HSA contributions and wellness reimbursements, insurance discounts, and incentives.
The City offers life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment, and long term disability insurance at no cost to employees. Employees may elect voluntary term life and short-term disability insurance. After 1 year of employment, six weeks of paid parental leave are available to eligible employees.
City Employees can participate in the Sustainable Commuter Incentive program for financial incentive. City Employees are able to ride the Bloomington Transit for free.
