Job Description
CNC/CAD Programmer and Operator
Job Summary: As a CNC/CAD Programmer and Operator, you will be responsible for programming, setting up, operating, and maintaining computer numerical control (CNC) machines, as well as utilizing computer-aided design (CAD/CAM) software to create and modify part designs. Your role will involve translating engineering drawings into CNC programs, optimizing machining processes, and ensuring the efficient production of precision components.
Key Responsibilities:
- CNC Programming:
- Interpret engineering drawings, models, and specifications to develop CNC programs for machining operations.
- Utilize CAD/CAM software (such as Bob Cad SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or Fusion 360) to create or modify part designs and generate tool paths for CNC machining.
- Write, modify, and debug CNC programs using G-code and/or conversational programming languages.
- Optimize programs for efficiency, tool utilization, and surface finish while minimizing cycle times.
- Conduct simulations and verify programs using CAD/CAM software or machine simulation tools to detect errors and ensure feasibility.
- CNC Setup and Operation:
- Set up CNC machines by installing fixtures, tooling, and workpieces according to setup sheets and instructions.
- Load and unload materials and tools into CNC machines, and adjust machine settings as necessary.
- Perform trial runs to verify setup and make adjustments to achieve desired part dimensions and tolerances.
- Monitor machine operations to ensure compliance with programmed instructions, quality standards, and production schedules.
- Troubleshoot and resolve machining issues such as tool wear, dimensional deviations, and machine malfunctions.
- CAD Design and Modification:
- Create or modify part designs using CAD software based on engineering specifications and requirements.
- Ensure that CAD models are compatible with CNC machining processes and constraints.
- Quality Assurance:
- Perform in-process and final inspections using precision measurement tools (e.g., calipers, micrometers, CMM) to verify part dimensions and tolerances.
- Make adjustments to CNC programs, machine settings, or part designs to meet quality requirements.
- Document and maintain inspection records, CNC programs, setup sheets, and CAD files for traceability and future reference.
- Maintenance and Troubleshooting:
- Conduct regular maintenance tasks on CNC machines, including cleaning, lubricating, and replacing worn components.
- Identify and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and programming issues affecting machine performance.
- Coordinate with maintenance technicians or external vendors for repairs and technical support as needed.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to safety protocols, procedures, and regulations to ensure a safe working environment.
- Follow quality standards (e.g., ISO, AS9100) and regulatory requirements applicable to machining and design activities.
- Report any safety hazards, incidents, or non-conformances promptly.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical training or certification in CNC programming, CAD/CAM, or machining is preferred.
- Experience: Proven experience as a CNC programmer and operator, with proficiency in CAD design. Familiarity with multi-axis machining and various CNC controls (e.g., Fanuc, Haas, Siemens) is desirable.
- Skills:
- Proficiency in CAD/CAM software for part design and CNC programming.
- Strong understanding of machining principles, tooling selection, and cutting parameters.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and technical specifications.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills with the ability to work in a team environment as well as individually.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and move moderate-weight objects, stand for extended periods, and perform repetitive tasks.
As a CNC/CAD Programmer and Operator, your technical expertise, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail will be critical in ensuring the efficient production of high-quality components. You will play a key role in the manufacturing process, contributing to the success of machining operations and the overall satisfaction of customers.
