Summary

We are seeking a highly self-motivated and organized pharmD or medical student to assume the role of temporary/part-time research staff, for the purpose of direct clinical observation, data collection, and analysis to understand the effects of Synapse medication decision-support software on pharmacist decision-making and efficiency.

Position-Specific Responsibilities

Under the supervision of Dr. Jeffrey Schnipper of the BWH Division of General Internal Medicine, the Clinical Research Assistant works directly with enrolled subjects as an essential research team member, tasked with the direct observation of in-hospital pharmacist workflow for a prospective pre-post mixed methods hybrid type 2 effectiveness-implementation study. This position fulfills key research duties in the abstraction and administration of time-and-motion data and ensures compliance with protocol and scientific objectives. The CRA works as part of a team in collecting, managing, and reporting results. Tasks may be performed independently and/or without direct supervision in a clinical setting.

Starting in March 2024 and lasting approximately 4 months, we are conducting a time-motion study of in-hospital pharmacist workflow to determine the effects of Synapse software on the number of medication regimen recommendations and time spent per recommendation. The Research Assistant observes continuous workflow of participating pharmacists, documenting the occurrence and duration of clinical activities using specialized time-motion collection software (TimeCaT). Students will be trained in research methodology and tools pertaining to this innovative study design, provided with an electronic tablet (Apple iPad) over the course of the observation period, and paid wages appropriate for their level of training and experience. We will provide additional education on Clinical Research methods. Typical shifts are Monday-Friday, lasting approximately 3-4 hours (8:30 AM-12 PM), over a predetermined observational period (approximately 40 observation periods total). Job will likely be split over 2-3 Research Assistants to limit the number of hours worked per day and per week.

Education: PharmD or MD student background or equivalent field experience in biomedical sciences, preferably in academic research disciplines.

• Familiarity and proficiency with Apple iOS operability

• Familiarity with commonly prescribed medications

• Familiarity with hospital medical settings and personnel

• Commitment to producing accurate and high-quality data;

• Prior experience conducting Clinical Research desired but not required;

• Strong organizational, time management and documentation skills;

• Willingness to learn new scientific tools and techniques quickly;

• Applicant will be trained to perform techniques in health services research, including techniques related to direct human observation. After sufficient training, the student is expected to work independently with minimal supervision;

• Awareness of basic safety requirements and ability to follow safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment.

Preferred Skills and Experience

• At least one year related work experience (relevant course work may count towards experience).

• Demonstrated knowledge of research populations and/or techniques helpful, but not required.

• Appropriate communications skills required.

The ideal candidate will have obtained (or is close to obtaining) a doctor of pharmacy degree, medical degree, masters in public health degree or bachelor’s degree in public health, epidemiology, health policy, biology, economics, health services research, or related fields. Preference will be given toward candidates who have prior related work experience. Other desirable traits include a strong aptitude for conducting scientific research, including exhibiting initiative, critical thinking, meticulousness, integrity, and the ability to complete work in a timely manner. He or she will ask insightful questions and be willing to take on novel tasks.
