Chief Operating Officer (COO)

POSITION PURPOSE

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will be a key member of the senior management team, reporting to the President & CEO. The COO will maintain control of diverse business operations, requiring efficiency, extensive experience in non-profit management, and a demonstrated ability to lead a team.

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is tasked with the oversight of all operational facets of the organization. This role includes managing internal processes, supervising program implementation, and ensuring operational efficiency across the organization. The COO oversees department heads in Programs, Development, HR, and Accounting to drive strategic initiatives, optimize resource allocation, and maintain the highest standards of service delivery.

Key Relationships:

The COO reports directly to the President & CEO.

Core Responsibilities:

The COO will be responsible for but not limited to the following:

Strategic Planning and Management:

• Implement effective operational strategies that align with the organization’s core mission and values.

• Collaborate with the CEO in setting and driving organizational vision and operational strategy.

Program Oversight:

• Ensure programmatic excellence through consistent quality of finance and administration, fundraising, communications, and systems.

Operational and Financial Management:

  • Oversee operational functions, ensuring teams have the necessary resources and guidance.

  • Analyze internal operations and identify areas for process enhancement.

  • Support the development and management of the organization’s budget, including

    tracking of operational metrics and analysis of financial data.

Fund Development:

  • Oversee the design and implementation of strategic fundraising plans that identify new funding opportunities, set goals, and develop diversified funding streams to ensure the financial sustainability of the organization.

  • In conjunction with the President & CEO and VP, Fund Development, build and nurture relationships with individual donors, corporate sponsors, and foundations.

  • Ensure effective stewardship strategies to enhance donor loyalty and long-term support.

Compliance and Risk Management:

  • Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions and operational policies.

  • Oversee risk management and legal activities: letters of agreement, contracts, leases, and other legal documents and agreements.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Enhance and build relationships with community partners, funders, government agencies, and other stakeholders.

  • Represent the organization in external forums as needed, advocating for the mission and programs.

Team Leadership and Development:

  • Provide leadership to team members and foster a culture of performance, accountability, and continuous improvement.

  • Develop and empower high performing teams to achieve the organization’s goals.

Personal Qualities and Key Credentials:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration or related field; a master’s degree is preferred but not required.

  • Minimum of 10 years of senior leadership experience in a non-profit organization.

  • Strong understanding of non-profit operations, including grant management and fundraising.

  • Exceptional organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, and task facilitation.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people.

  • Passionate about Big Brothers Big Sisters mission and impact.

  • Detailed understanding of non-profit accounting principles

  • Previous experience managing a multi-million-dollar P&L in a non-profit environment is required.

  • An adequate knowledge of philosophy, principles and methods, and an ability to use this knowledge effectively in a social service environment.

  • An ability to establish positive staff and professional relationships.

  • Administrative, organizational and leadership ability.

  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning and implementation.

  • Strong understanding of mentoring programs and youth development.

  • Excellent communication, public speaking, and relationship-building skills.

  • Proficient in budget management and data analysis.

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.

  • Proficiency in office software tools, Microsoft Office Suite, and other relevant

    applications.

  • Ability to inspire, motivate, and provide leadership to a diverse team.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to navigate complex situations.

  • Proven ability to develop and maintain relationships with a wide array of people, junior and senior, for-profit, and non-profit, and from diverse backgrounds.

  • Bilingual in Spanish and/or Creole is not required but a plus.

  • Understanding of the nonprofit sector and familiarity with the mission of Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Miami is a plus.

Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

  • Routine office environment with flexible work hours to meet the organization’s needs.

  • Must be able to drive and travel through Miami-Dade and Monroe County for events and meetings.

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position at least 50% of the time.

  • Must be able to move about the inside of the office.

  • Must be able to exchange accurate communication.

  • Must be able to operate office productivity machinery (i.e., computer, copier, etc.)

  • Must be able to lift office equipment up to 25 pounds.

Location:

This position is based in Miami, Florida, at BBBS of Miami’s headquarters at 550 NW 42nd Avenue Miami, FL 33126 with 5-10% of total work time traveling.

Compensation:

The Chief Operating Officer is a full-time exempt position. This position is supervised by the President & CEO. The salary for this position is between $150,000 - $200,000 depending on experience. BBBS of Miami positions involve regular computer use plus some minimal lifting.
