This recruitment is to fill an immediate need in the Building Division and to establish a list for possible future vacancies.

WHAT WE DO
The Building Division of the Community Development Department is responsible for monitoring construction activity, and to determine that any ongoing construction project has the required permits and conforms to the approved plans, and any conditions of approval.

Under the general direction of assigned supervisor, a Building Inspector I/II inspects buildings and structures in all stages of construction, alteration, and repair. The Building Inspector II performs the entire range of field inspection work requiring a complete knowledge of building inspection principles and practices. Supervision is not normally a responsibility of this classification series, but may act as lead worker for temporarily assigned employees, or special projects. This classification may be flexibly staffed at the discretion of the Department Director.

The Building Inspector position is an Individual Contributor role that provides the last line of defense to ensure all structures are code compliant. Their role enables the public to build with life and safety in mind so that Santa Maria residents feel safe and enjoy peace of mind while occupying buildings in the city.


Job Description: Building Inspector I/II
Appointment at the appropriate level will depend upon qualifications and experience.
Building Inspector I: $2,397.38 - $2,914.03
Building Inspector II: $2,643.73 - $3,213.48

These duties are a representative example; position assignments may vary depending on the business needs of the department and organization. This position:
  • Inspects buildings and structures in all phases of construction, alterations and repairs; enforces zoning codes; performs building plan checks; processes permits; staffs the public counter; etc.
  • Ensures construction compliance and conformance with building codes and pertinent provisions of State law for building; housing; plumbing; electrical; mechanical; mobile home codes; state energy and disabled access regulations; etc.
  • Reviews building plans; coordinates with other departments/divisions and collects their conditions/requirements during plan review.
  • Calculates fees and issues permits.
  • Meets with architects and builders to discuss plans, code compliance, and changes to plans.
  • Provides technical advice to builders and the general public.
  • Scope of assigned area will depend on departmental structure and is at the discretion of the department director.
  • Upholds the values of the organization and has strong customer service orientation.
  • Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrates regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
  • Building Inspector I
    • Ideally, three years of experience in the building construction or inspection fields, or
    • ICBO/ICC Building Inspector Certification and 18 months of related experience in the building construction or inspection field; and
    • Graduation from high school.
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
    • Certification: ability to obtain and obtain within one year: Building Inspection Certification issued by the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) or International Code Council (ICC), is required within one year of appointment.
  • Building Inspector II
    • Ideally, and in in addition to the above requirements, experience and/or training equivalent to two years of responsible experience at the Building Inspector I level; and
    • Graduation from high school.
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
    • Certification Upon hire: ICC Building Inspection Certification and any 3 (three) additional Certifications in Plumbing, Mechanical, or Electrical fields issued by ICC or IAPMO.
  • Current technical/professional knowledge of complex principles, methods, standards and techniques associated with the scope of work of a recognized profession, such as:
    • Building, Housing, Plumbing, Electrical, Mechanical, mobile home codes, State energy and disabled access regulations, etc.
    • Effective verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Microsoft Office Suite (or equivalent).
    • Use computer and other office equipment effectively.
