Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The mission of the School of Nursing is to enhance and improve the health and well-being of the people of North Carolina and the nation, and, as relevant and appropriate, the people of other nations, through its programs of education, research, and scholarship, and through clinical practice and community service. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing has been the leader in nursing education in North Carolina throughout its history. Established in 1950, it was the first school of nursing in North Carolina to offer a four-year baccalaureate nursing degree program followed by the first master’s degree program, the first continuing education program for nurses, first doctoral program, and first accelerated BSN option to students with college degrees. Today, the School is renowned for its academic programs, its research and its commitment to clinical and community service within state, national and global communities.

Position Summary:


This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with UNC System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The Associate Director is responsible for managing all aspects of Alumni Relations, including but not limited to directing the operations and board of directors of the SON Alumni Association, as well as developing key messages, communications, events and activities for alumni engagement.
Reporting to the Senior Director of Development, the Associate Director of Development andAlumni Relations will serve as a frontline fundraiser responsible for building relationships with and securing leadership annual gifts ranging from $1,000-25,000, from the School of Nursing’s (SON) 10,000+ alumni and other donors. The Associate Director will plan, direct and implement all aspects of the school’s annual giving program, including personal solicitations, direct mail, digital media, GiveUNC, Senior Class Campaign, reunion and class giving programs, and volunteer recruitment, training and management.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Minimum of a bachelor’s degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with related experience. For positions with responsibility for direct solicitation of gifts and funds, a minimum of 1 year of professional-level, direct solicitation/fundraising experience is required.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Ability to develop trust and strong collaborative working relationships. Experience nurturing and motivating volunteers in order to foster engagement and exceed organizational goals. An employment history highlighted by increasing levels of responsibility and a demonstrated ability to exercise sensitivity and good judgment in dealing with staff peers and the public. Superb interpersonal relationship skills. Exceptional written and oral communications skills. Constituent relationship management system (Blackbaud, etc.) experience preferred. The position requires a commitment to excellence, attention to detail, a willingness to travel, and an ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

3+ years of demonstrated successful annual giving or transferable experience preferred. Ability to interact effectively in a comprehensive research university setting. Familiarity with the University’s academic and administrative offices and their functions; knowledge of and ability to tap resources within the University community.
