The University of Iowa Facilities Management, Building Operations & Maintenance Department is seeking an Associate Director. This position ensures the continuity of university building function by leading teams that maintain the facilities at optimal levels. This leader is able to drive positive change for the organization by implementing improvement initiatives across and within teams, benefiting both employee culture and services provided to campus partners and strengthening organizational trust. Responsible for maintenance stewardship of over 9 million square feet of General Education Fund (GEF) supported buildings. Provides customer support to 11 UI academic colleges across more than 120 major buildings located in Iowa City, Coralville (Oakdale campus), and a few other locations throughout the state. This leader is a member of the extended leadership for Facilities Management and able to represent Building Operations & Maintenance in diverse settings across campus. The building maintenance team consists of roughly 55 employees providing trades support across reactive, preventive, and predictive maintenance practices. Responsible for leadership support/consulting for the 24/7 on-call maintenance program.
This position is eligible for hybrid work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.
Duties to Include:
- Oversight of budget process for maintenance shops.
- Lead and design programs that are customer responsive and align with university goals and funding.
- Engage as a 1FM leader for the organization and support/drive Building Operations & Maintenance extended leadership team initiatives.
- Ensure maintenance shops are following established workflows, processes, and managing workload in accordance with the Service Guide standards.
- Assess, recommend, prioritize, and implement strategies to help the maintenance organization become more efficient and increase the stewardship offering to campus.

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm with intermittent/as-needed support for the 24/7 on-call maintenance program

About Facilities Management:
Facilities Management (FM) is a service unit of approximately 500 employees who work behind the scenes, 24 hours a day, serving the University of Iowa as stewards for our downtown Iowa City campus and Oakdale campus in Coralville. FM staff coordinate campus master planning, manage design and construction, and maintain and clean the buildings and grounds.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Professional experience (typically 7-9 years) in a leadership role, with specific responsibilities for leading strategic projects/programs
- Working knowledge of maintenance practices and/or building/production systems
- Demonstrated leadership ability and mid-level planning skills with a working knowledge of project management and continuous improvement
- Proven ability to implement organizational change
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and collaborative manner while creating, promoting, and sustaining an inclusive environment
- Commitment to and alignment with the values of the Finance & Operations and Facilities Management organizations, including a demonstrated commitment to excellence through diversity, equity, & inclusion.
- Demonstrated proficiency with computer software applications including Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint), HR Information systems, and Computerized Maintenance Management systems (e.g. AiM)
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience (10+ years) with building systems
- Experience with commissioning and on-going building system optimization practices
- Experience in the construction industry
- Higher education facilities experience, military base facilities experience, or experience in a similar complex campus environment
- Supervision of professionals and skilled trades, preferably on a university campus.
