This position will serve as Editor of Forward magazine, as well as lead or participate in projects, processes, and initiatives that complement, support, and promote the work of the Iowa State University Foundation.
Based on qualifications and experience, a selected candidate may hold one of these job titles: Associate Director of Communications or Director of Communications.
Core responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Lead the planning, budgeting, writing, and design of multiple issues (print and online) of Forward magazine.
- Produce content that engages Forward magazine’s audiences in exploring the broader context of Iowa State’s strategic priorities to introduce them to opportunities for greatest impact, as well as communicate and cultivate the culture of philanthropy.
- Attract and retain freelance writers for foundation publications.
- Assess the magazine through measurement tools such as reader surveys and adjust tactics to ensure its effectiveness.
- Develop high-quality communications that inform, engage, and motivate target audiences including stewardship reports, news releases, gift solicitations, case statements, and other communications.
- Edit copy for accuracy, adherence to content strategy, and for ISU Foundation style.
Qualifications
Education & Work Experience
- Bachelor’s degree; preferably in communications, English, journalism, or public relations.
- 3+ years of professional writing and editing experience.
Desired Skills & Experience
- Prior experience in magazine editing preferred.
- Experience in narrative non-fiction, creative writing, or journalism is preferred.
- Experience working for or with nonprofits, specifically institutions of higher education is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability as a versatile, creative, and persuasive writer.
- Ability to work in a team environment and with a variety of personalities.
- Excellent proofreading and editing skills; familiarity with AP style.
- Advanced writing, interviewing, and research skills.
- Ability to manage workload, make routine decisions, and problem-solve independently.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office.
- Must possess strong project management skills and be able to handle several activities simultaneously with attention and adherence to deadlines and accuracy.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality is required.
