The University of Washington, School of Social Work invites applications for one (1) Full-Time Assistant Teaching Professor in the Office of Field Education (OFE), effective no later than September 16, 2024. This is a multi-year (1-5 year renewable), full-time position, with a 9-month service period, September 16 through June 15 annually, with up to 2.5 paid months of summer salary based on curricular and administrative need. The base salary range for these positions will be $7,275 - $8,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

Our School’s social justice mission focuses on the knowledge of, and responsiveness to the needs of culturally diverse and oppressed populations, particularly in meeting the educational mission and learning needs of students at the University and School of Social Work.

Responsibilities:

Assistant Teaching Professors in the Office of Field Education (OFE) are faculty positions that support and are based in the educational operations of the Office of Field Education. Field Faculty (FF) are responsible for conducting the core duties and expectations of the required field education or practicum experience for students pursuing degrees in professional Social Work. Field Faculty provide a quality educational learning environment for students, practicum sites, field/practicum instructors, agency administrators, community stakeholders, and academic support services. Field Education is closely integrated with the curricula and learning objectives of the Bachelorʻs of Social Work (BASW) and Masters of Social Work (MSW) (Extended Degree Program, Day Program, and Advanced Standing Program) degrees at the school. The primary goal of the OFE and Field Faculty is to engage students in collaborative and impactful practicum experiences that align with the values, mission, and vision of the School. Field education is integrally linked to the curriculum, practice, theoretical, and other competencies which are requirements of the Council on Social Work Education, our national accrediting body. Field Faculty members assess the educational and professional development needs of students, provide guidance and mentorship to students and practicum instructors, and evaluate all aspects of the required field/practicum experience. Field Faculty coordinate the student field/practicum experience from identifying student practice interests to assisting students in selecting practicum sites which meet those interests to linking students to agencies and qualified Field Instructors who will supervise student experiences in the field. They also serve as liaisons, mentors, and resources for students and Field/Practicum Instructors at community-based practicum sites. Field Faculty as with all faculty and staff at the SSW are expected to actively participate in shared governance at the School and provide leadership for collaborative curriculum and program development and other initiatives in the Office of Field Education, BASW and MSW programs, and other academic services (student services, admissions).

As Teaching Professors in the Office of Field Education, Field Faculty focus their work commitments, duties, and responsibilities on teaching relevant to field education as a core activity and expectation.

Specific Duties Include:

1. Adhering to and Acting Upon Values and Mission of the SSW and OFE

• Demonstrate awareness, respect and understanding of the needs of a highly diverse student body, representing many marginalized identities, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
• Engage in personal reflection, implementation, and integration of anti-racist, anti-oppressive Social Work practice and education throughout work with students, agencies, and field instructors.
• Articulate historical and current issues, innovations, and best practices in anti-racist and anti-oppressive field education, along with developing programs and policies that address those issues.
• Effectively relate to a variety of constituencies, including students, faculty, practicum sites, community groups, and alumni as they impact each group's interests and concerns related to field education.

2. Working with Students

• Have in-depth knowledge of the BASW and MSW curricula as integrated with field education
• Provide advising, mentorship, educational needs assessment, and integration of student learning in the field and classroom for students
• Assess and identify student educational needs and career goals with appropriate field placements to meet those needs for students.
• Ensure the timely completion of practicum requirements, including plan development, evaluation of student field learning outcomes, Learning Contracts, and other requirements, as well as updates of practicum site information.
• Provide ongoing, timely support, mentorship, and ongoing communication to students
• Manage, coordinate, and assess efficacy of student and practicum placements as accessed through a School-wide, computer database for field education
• Provide educational and professional career advising for students related to their field education experience

3.Working with Practicum Sites and Field Instructors

• Assist in the recruitment, identification, and capacity-building of new and current field practicum sites
• Advise and assist agencies in the development of a field education program for students in placement
• Conduct regular site visits at agencies with students in practicum placements
• Provide ongoing, timely support, mentorship, and ongoing communication to field instructors and practicum sites
• Provide high quality educational and professional development opportunities for Field Instructors and practicum sites, including teaching field-specific courses, seminars, workshops, and conference presentations relevant to the educational mission of the field/practicum experience
• Field instructor support advising, orientation, liaison, training, and integration of learning objectives in field and classroom
• Engage in, support, and mediate relationships with students, practicum sites, and field instructors through formal liaison function
• Encourage and engage Field Instructors and practicum sites to participate in the Field Education Advisory Council

4. Teaching Field Education-Related Content

• Actively and purposefully engage in the integration of field and classroom learning with the BASW and MSW degree programs and other student services
• Participate in the development, design, coordination, and delivery/teaching of field education curriculum for students
• Provide high quality educational opportunities for students, including teaching field-specific courses, seminars, and field-related workshops.
• Develop modalities to center the integration of classroom learning and practice experience in the field, in collaboration with classroom and field faculty ·

5. Collaborating with SSW Colleagues and Programs

• Actively and positively collaborate as a team member in Office of Field Education governance, program development, curricular initiatives, and other activities
• Work closely and collaboratively with BASW and MSW programs to assure integration of field education and course curriculum requirements
• Engage in School of Social Work governance, program development, curricular and other initiatives (as required of all faculty)
• Engage in and actively participate in UW governance and other initiatives relevant to field education and Social Work
• Actively participate in faculty meetings and School of Social Work Committees
• Seek out and initiate projects, programs, and activities relevant to field education and the Field Faculty role

6. Engaging in Scholarly Work

• Engage in scholarship and contribute to knowledge specifically relevant to field education in Social Work through (below are examples):
• introduction of new knowledge or methods relevant to field education into BASW and MSW course content
• creation or use of innovative pedagogical methods relevant to field education
• development of new courses, curricula, or course materials relevant to field education
• develop written manuscripts, blogs, multi-media materials, or other work for dissemination focused on innovations or research on field education as integral to Social Work practice, pedagogy, and/or curricular policy
• participation in professional conferences, presenting workshops or papers on field education
• receipt of grants or awards relevant to field education
• contributions to interdisciplinary teaching relevant to field education
• participation and leadership in professional associations representing or relevant to field education
• presentations to agencies, students, or community groups regarding field education and Social Work
• making significant contributions about field education and Social Work to professionals at other educational institutions
• providing leadership in the regional field education consortium

7. Engaging with Communities:

• Serve/participate in community-based organizations in significant volunteer capacity, such as Board membership, community-based initiatives, leadership roles
• Participate in community initiatives relevant to Social Work practice, field education, and professional Social Work
• Participate in community-based activities relevant to social justice, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive practice/advocacy

8. Additional Responsibilities:

• This position will be expected to work daily with computerized data management systems and information technology, including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and other communication software
• Field Faculty are expected to meet with students, practicum sites, and field instructors, in person and remotely, including some evening and weekend work throughout King County and the Pacific Northwest, including extensive travel within Seattle, King County, and Snohomish County.
• Complete other duties as necessary, as requested by the Assistant Dean/Director, Office of Field Education

Qualifications

• MSW from CSWE accredited program or foreign equivalent

• Five years of full-time post-MSW practice experience in any area of Social Work

• Three years of experience as a field/practicum instructor, supervising MSW or BSW students as interns, volunteers, or in other training capacities

• Three years of direct practice experience working with historically and socially marginalized, diverse communities and settings

Experience requirements may be filled concurrently

• Evidence of exemplary record of teaching, training, research, practice in field education, Social Work, and/or related discipline

Positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to LICSW or other licensure or certifications relevant to the position
