Position Description

The Department of Digital Arts and Experimental Media (DXARTS) in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Washington (Seattle) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position. DXARTS is seeking a visual artist with an experimental practice that critically engages with new media and emerging technologies. UW faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

This position has an anticipated start date of Autumn 2024 and will have a 9-month service period. Washington State Law requires that this ad list a binding salary range. The base salary range for this position will be $9,112 - $10,556 per month on a 9-month basis ($82,000 - $95,000 annually), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

Position Details

The successful candidate will:

  • Teach studio-based classes at both undergraduate and graduate levels. These typically comprise a core sequence of courses that are taught on an annual basis, as well as quarter-long advanced seminars and special topics courses. Areas of teaching include, but are not limited to, algorithmic approaches to digital video and animation, real-time and generative imaging, data-driven art, interactivity, VR, and multimedia installation.
  • Do original research and develop an innovative and recognized arts practice; Areas of research include, but are not limited to, data visualization, machine learning, algorithmic processes, computer vision, and the impacts of emerging technologies on culture and society.
  • Mentor and supervise doctoral students, imparting them the value of artistic research, and teaching them research methodologies and techniques;
  • Participate of DXARTS’ academic and artistic activities, as well as collaborate in research projects within the department and the UW at large;
  • Assist with the development, maintenance, and supervision of departmental facilities and equipment;
  • Lead the development of new curriculum connected to the candidate’s research and in line with DXARTS main areas of research, in particular data-driven arts.

Qualifications

A PhD in Digital Arts or another relevant field, or foreign equivalent, is required by the start of the appointment. The successful applicant would be a visual artist with an experimental practice that critically engages with new media and emerging technologies. The applicant should have a strong record of presenting work nationally and internationally, and a strong portfolio of research-based artistic works.
