Job description

Children’s Theatre Company (CTC) is seeking qualified candidates for Assistant Director positions for different productions for our ’24-’25 season. These are temporary positions working on one of three productions:

· Drawing Lessons (work from September 3, 2024 to October 17, 2024)

· Milo Imagines the World (work from December 27, 2024 to February 13, 2025)

· Frozen (March 6, 2025 to April 24, 2025)

The Assistant Director experience at CTC is designed to expose undergraduate, graduate and early career directors to an internal view of the rehearsal process of a professional regional theatre that works with youth. This position requires someone who has demonstrated knowledge and skill in directing for the stage, who enjoys working with youth, who has the ability to build positive working relationships with children from age 10 to 18, and who can positively contribute to an anti-racist/anti-bias organization. Applicants for this role should have strong organization skills, sound judgement, patience and the ability to work collaboratively.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Director begins their process by meeting with the director and attending initial design/process meetings as available. They attend all rehearsals, production meetings and technical rehearsals through opening night. They also work with the stage manager to facilitate understudy rehearsals the week after opening.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Supporting the Production

· Attend rehearsals and production meetings

· Take notes for the director during meetings and organizing them a coherent manner

· Participate in running scenes with actors, giving notes as needed

· Communicate with the Stage Manager and/or the design team regarding production

· Facilitate student-lead research projects

· Coach student actors

· Work with Stage Manager to facilitate understudy rehearsals after opening

Collaborate with all staff in the furtherance of CTC’s goal of being an anti-racist/anti-bias theatre that works towards Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

· Encourage and empower everyone to speak out against racist and/or biased workplace practices and policies

· Positively contribute to the ACT One platform, creating a future where our theatre is a home for all people, all families, reflective of our community

Experience

· Demonstrated knowledge and skill in directing for the stage

· Demonstrated skill in working with young people preferred

· Demonstrated ability to build positive working relationships with ages 10-18

COMPENSATION

The pay for these temporary positions is $684.00 per week. Benefits include sick and safe leave and the ability to contribute to a 403(b)-retirement savings plan.
