American Chemical Society is looking for an enthusiastic and high-performing sales leader to lead the growth of advertising, exhibit, and sponsorship sales. The Assistant Director of sales will be responsible for over $8M in revenue generation and direct the sales and custom publishing operations at ACS We are seeking a strategic and charismatic leader to set and meet revenue strategies for many of ACS key programs: ACS Meeting & Exposition, Advertising Sales, and Sponsorships for the society. The incumbent will oversee a network of internal and external sales representatives and also negotiate and manage several key accounts for our custom content studio, C&EN BrandLab.
The ideal partner is in strategic conversations at the executive level, will be responsible for collaborating with senior leaders and business partners on sales and revenue operations improvements, and will drive key strategic business development opportunities. You will work with leaders across meetings, editorial, education, development, and marketing to deliver, monitor and communicate progress towards goals. The role comes with a competitive base salary and bonus potential.
Here's what you will be doing:
- Manages 2 direct reports (three indirects) and network of nine (9) external sales representatives.
- Provides strategic and operational oversight for all revenue generation: advertising, custom publishing, event sponsorships and exhibits, educational partner content, and Strategic Partnerships.
- Develops and executes strategic sales plans that appropriately position ACS' brand, audience, and member benefits within the marketplace
- Develops sales and revenue goals and manages/reports on progress
- Creates and monitors individual and representative sales plans in line with ACS' long term strategies to maximize growth. Responsible for budgets, forecasts and revenue necessary to execute all plans within areas of responsibility
- Executes biweekly sales meetings, leads training and development for the sales team, and collaborates with the operations manager to execute the annual sales meeting.
- Provides strategic counsel and direction of the ACS Member Benefit Affinity program; negotiates with partners to provide offerings to drive member retention
- Collaborates with all ACS divisions and departments on partnership sales strategies that position ACS products and services as indispensable resources for chemistry professionals and fulfill ACS' strategic directive
- Represents ACS at annual meetings and industry conferences and events with up to 15% travel expected.
Desired Skills and Experience:
- A Bachelor's degree in business, marketing or related field or equivalent experience
- 10+ years leading high performing global sales teams
- Excellent verbal, presentation, and written communication skills
- Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills
- Familiarity and knowledge of the media and ad tech ecosystems
This position will be primarily based in the Washington D.C. office. ACS employees work a hybrid work schedule, consisting of working onsite, three days per week. ACS employees are in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday with the third in-office day scheduled in consultation with the manager. While always welcome to work in the office, employees may work the other two days of the week from a location of their choice. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement.
