Job Summary:

The Office of Federal Relations advocates on behalf of UW-Madison in Washington, DC. Our office works to advance the university's interests and serves as a liaison to the federal government.
The Assistant Director is responsible for monitoring and analyzing federal agency regulations, policy developments, and funding opportunities that impact UW-Madison. This role identifies opportunities for faculty and administrators to provide expertise to federal agency officials or serve on advisory groups. The Assistant Director will develop a strong working knowledge of UW-Madison research initiatives and strengths through close coordination with campus leadership, leveraging that knowledge to identify research opportunities. The Assistant Director works with the Director of Federal Relations to support daily operations, collaborate with campus-based University Relations colleagues, and coordinate with the Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association to engage DC-area alumni. In addition, this role will work with the Wisconsin in Washington Director to support student-focused programs and initiatives, including Washington, DC internships.

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree
Preferred
Master's Degree
Advanced degree in law, political science/government, public policy, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) or related field preferred.

Qualifications:

Required:
  • Professional work experience in federal government affairs, public policy, or a related field.
  • A demonstrated understanding of the federal legislative and regulatory processes.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Strong analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to exercise independent judgment, decision making and confidentiality, all with limited supervision. Must be self-motivated.

Preferred:
  • Extensive background in higher education, federal research funding, and related policies.
  • A proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships with federal agency officials.

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%
This position will be located in Washington, DC with occasional travel to Madison required.
