JOB OVERVIEW - Montana Correctional Enterprises (MCE) provides employment and training opportunities for eligible institutional inmates, consistent with the Mission of the Department of Corrections, to hold inmates accountable through work, skill development and restitution, while maintaining public safety and trust.
This position is assigned to the MCE Accounting and Support Operation. The MCE Accounting and Support Operation is responsible for the development and maintenance of the MCE accounting system (all purchases, disbursements, billing, collections, financial transactions, recording thereof for the MCE Division); and support functions for the Ranch, Industries, and Vocational Training/Education programs. This position:
- Prepares, examines, and analyzes accounting and budget-related statements, reports, and supporting documents.
- Classifies, records, and reports financial operations by applying the theories and principles of accounting.
- Identifies, researches, and resolves accounting discrepancies.
- Analyzes, allocates, and monitors expenditures and revenues.
- Assists with the development of accounting procedures.
- Maintains accounting ledgers, journals, registers, etc.
- Reconciles statements with records and accounting transactions.
- Performs specialized accounting duties requiring advanced training or licensure, such as forensic accounting duties, statewide accounting responsibilities, or responsibility for submitting and attesting to the ACFR.
- Is responsible for providing financial information or testimony to legislative committees and/or other public forums.
- Develops standards, controls, and policies to safeguard data integrity.
- May provide direction or guidance to technical and/or support staff.
- May perform duties requiring a CPA licensure.

QUALIFICATIONS –
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
- Four years of accounting experience.
- Advanced training, licensure, or certification associated with accounting specialty.
- May require current Montana CPA license as found at 37-50-302, MCA, if applicable; Other specialty training may substitute for CPA.
- May be required to maintain continuing education associated with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).
- Other combinations of education or experience may be substituted.
