2Nd Assistant Superintendent

Atkins Golf Club at the University of Illinois is looking for qualified applicants to fill our 2nd Assistant Superintendent Position. Atkins Golf Club is home to the 2023 Big 10 Champion Fighting Illini Men's and Women's Golf Teams and will host the 2024 Illinois State Amateur Championship. Originally opened as Stone Creek Golf Club, Atkins Golf Club went through a renovation in 2021 which included rebuilding all greens, relocating and rebuilding all bunkers using the Better Billy Bunker system, and adding length to allow the teams to stretch the course to over 7500 yards. Atkins GC also hosts the Annual Fighting Illini Spring Championship in April.
The 2nd Assistant will report directly to the Superintendent and be directly involved with building and executing the vision of the Golf Course Maintenance Department. This role will be a working position with some supervisory requirements. Atkins Golf Club is comprised of Bent grass greens, tees, and fairways with Bluegrass/Rye roughs and some Fescue throughout the course.
Duties Include but are not limited to:
- Irrigation scheduling, troubleshooting, and repair
- Chemical and fertilizer application and documentation in accordance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations
- Moisture management on the course
- Crew management and supervision
- Assisting in building of agronomic programs
- Course Set-up
- Using all types of turf equipment to maintain the golf course
Work Environment:
- Regularly exposed to all weather conditions
- Moderate exposure to chemicals and fumes used in the workplace
- Ability to lift/move 50 pounds on a regular basis
- Must be able to squat, hunch, stand, and use arms and hands constantly
Qualifications:
- Associates or bachelors degree in turf management, horticulture, or landscape preferred
- 1-2 season of golf maintenance experience preferred but new graduates are encouraged to apply
- Illinois pesticide applicator's license or ability to obtain in the first 90 days
- Toro irrigation experience a plus
- Calibration of application equipment

Additional Salary Information: Compensation and benefits include $44,000 annually, matching 401k, sick and vacation time, membership to local and national organizations, and golf privileges.
