SalaryMDRC is a nonprofit, nonpartisan education and social policy research organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals, families, and children with low incomes. We are committed to finding solutions to some of the most difficult social problems facing the nation — from reducing poverty and bolstering economic mobility to improving public education and college graduation rates. We design promising new interventions, evaluate existing programs using the highest research standards, and provide technical assistance to build better programs and deliver effective interventions at scale.
This position is in MDRC’s Research Technology Unit (RTU). The RTU’s goal is to provide research staff with the training, tools, and resources they need to manage, analyze, and present research data.
We are looking for someone who is interested in building their statistical programming and data skills, finds mentoring and collaborating with co-workers rewarding, and enjoys the policy research context of MDRC’s work.
Responsibilities
- Mentor and support staff in developing statistical programming skills (e.g., R, SQL)
- Review code to troubleshoot issues and advise on alternate approaches
- Coordinate collaboration and code-sharing across research project teams
- Develop training materials and knowledge base content to share programming techniques and best practices
- Organize and facilitate informal trainings and user groups
- Perform monitoring and maintenance tasks in our analytics programming environment
Qualifications
- R programming experience required. Experience with SQL, SAS, or Python, a plus.
- Experience cleaning, restructuring, and reporting on a variety of data sets.
- Experience in a training and/or support role preferred.
- Works well with a wide range of staff, both technical and non-technical.
- Comfortable speaking in front of small groups (e.g., informal training).
- Strong written and communication skills.
This position is part of a collective bargaining unit under Social Policy Worker United (SPWU) – Local 57 of the American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME).

Location: The position is ideally based in MDRC’s New York City office. MDRC is also open to remote work.
Compensation and benefits:
- The salary offered for a Tech Analyst I position is $76K - $80K, based on relevant experience comparable to the role.
- The salary offered for a Tech Analyst II position is $81K - $84K, based on relevant experience comparable to the role.
