The Young Adult Shelter provides Young Adults ages 18-24 with a safe shelter 365 days a year. More importantly, the YAS offers life-saving and life-changing programs that provide medical care, food, and resources to the young people in our community who need it most.


Youth and Young Adults who access the YAS most often have experienced or may be experiencing a variety of inequities and disparities; including but not limited to: homelessness, economic instability, high rates of chronic health and mental health conditions, traumatic events, lack of social support, etc. These clients, typically, have developed numerous skills that have helped them survive and meet their needs on the streets, while facing many barriers.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:

This is a variable hour position based on employee availability. Scheduled shifts may vary and may fall on any time of day (including evening and overnight hours) and on any day of the week (including weekends and holidays). Work hours may vary and may include:

  • 12-hour Overnight shift between 7:00pm and 7:00am, during which YAS Support Staff must remain awake;
  • Day shifts with varying lengths and morning start times;
  • Mid shifts with varying lengths and afternoon start times;
  • Varied weekend shifts

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each of the essential duties/responsibilities listed below. The essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Remain awake during shift
  • Respect and value all YYA regardless of circumstance, behavior, or need
  • Ensure that all clients are in bed with lights out by 11:00 p.m. and maintain an atmosphere that is conducive to sleep
  • Conduct hour activities checks and document all activities in an overnight log
  • Wake up youth in a respectful manner by 6:00 am, ensure that all clients are out of bed by 6:15 and have exited the shelter by 6:30 am.
  • Read and adhere to agency and program policies and procedures
  • Enforce rules and expectations of the YAS at all times, providing necessary documentation as needed
  • Perform reception duties including but not limited to answering the telephone, taking thorough messages, transferring calls to appropriate staff, answering questions about the program, and making referrals to appropriate agencies and inter-agency contacts
  • Log clients in on log sheets and mark services utilized in the YAS, on a daily basis
  • Complete new intakes on new clients
  • Maintain records of client contact and participation in programs
  • Assist with case management through the use of the pass down log
  • Inform Shelter Supervisor of any incidents involving law enforcement
  • Distribute needed hygiene products and other necessities to clients
  • Assist in meal preparation and clean-up
  • Follow maintenance plans and check off completed daily/nightly chores
  • Monitor clients in all activities
  • Participate in required staff meetings including regular supervision
  • Meet program requirements for billable client services.
  • Organize and participate in special activities/recreational events with clients
  • Inform clients of upcoming events/activities and responsibilities
  • Clean facility, which may include but not limited to: sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, wiping tables, cleaning kitchen and restroom area, washing bedding and clothing donations
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with coworkers, supervisors, and clients, including but not limited to the utilization of conflict management and de-escalation skills
  • Answer work related texts and emails in a timely manner as directed by supervisor(s)

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
  • This position may require intermittent travel to local community trainings. Mileage to/from these functions is reimbursable with proper paperwork.
  • This role has no supervisory responsibilities.

Compensation:

  • Monetary compensation for this role is $20.00 per hour. Hours worked in the night are subject to a shift differential of an additional $0.50 per hour so if you worked overnights, you would make $20.50/Hour.

Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must meet the minimum qualifications listed below. These qualifications are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required to perform this job.


Required Education and/or Experience: To perform this job successfully, an individual must have:

  • High School Diploma or GED/HSEC

Certificates and/or Licenses: To perform this job successfully, an individual must:

  • Be eligible to be licensed as Agency Affiliated Counselor (AAC) and apply for credential within 30 days of hire.
  • Have a Food Handler's Permit
  • CPR/First Aid/Bloodborne Pathogens Training (must be obtained within six months of hire)
  • Must obtain a TB test before employment can begin, or produce results of a negative TB test administered no earlier than 8 months prior to the hire date.
  • Reliable transportation
  • Successfully pass a Comprehensive Criminal History Background Check and Driving Record Review

Bona Fide Occupational Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age according to Program Requirements

  • Experience working with high risk groups
  • Experience with time management
  • Experience with being self-sufficient and working independently
  • Experience working in a high stress environment

Physical Requirements:

In order to meet all expectations of this position, an individual must be able to:

  • Regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Ascend and descend stairs. Required use of washers and dryers, as well as standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Perceive text and buttons on the computer screen and discern print and handwriting on paper forms.
  • Frequently remain in a standing position and move about inside and outside of the shelter. Lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Access file cabinets, office machinery etc.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move client possessions, small to medium objects in the office, and/or cleaning supplies (up to 50 pounds). Required to climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

Work Conditions:

While performing the essential duties/responsibilities of this job, the employee may experience the following environmental conditions at the frequency indicated:

  • Noise Conditions: This job operates in a licensed Maternity Group Home. The noise level in the work environment can be loud. The position regularly interacts with youths ages 16-20, and with very young children, including newborns.
  • Heat/Cold: May be subject to heat, cold, wet, and/or humid weather conditions, and occasionally extreme heat and/or cold.
  • Injury Exposure: This position requires working with standard office equipment - copy machines, computers, and phones, in addition to washers, dryers and other appliances.
  • Atmospheric Exposures: May be exposed to various scents and perfumes, less than sanitary or uncomfortable conditions, various pests and pathogens, participants' service and emotional support animals, as well as clients in physical, mental or emotional distress.
