Northeast Region is actively seeking a Regulation and Prevention Technician (Wildland Fire Operations Technician 2) for our North Columbia fire unit, located in Colville, WA.
The Regulation and Prevention Technician is responsible for wildfire suppression, prevention and regulation throughout our region including state trust lands. The Northeast Region conducts suppression actions on over 450 fire starts annually, processes approximately 500 burn permit requests annually, and provides training courses to local cooperators. Interagency cooperation occurs on the majority of the WILDLAND FIREs and in most fire training courses. Interagency cooperation includes working with local fire districts, state and federal partners, and is a key function of these positions.
Duties
Responsibilities:
The Regulation and Preventions Technician has a great influence on the quality, image and message delivered to the general public of Washington State. This position works closely with stakeholders and other agencies, and plays a leadership role in fire suppression activities.
The majority of the duties will include administering and approving burn permits, interpreting/applying fire regulations and IFPL restrictions, conducting WILDLAND FIRE investigations, and fire suppression. This position will act as a Wildland Fire Investigator regularly. The Regulation and Prevention Technician will work closely with fire suppression resources to suppress and prevent the spread of WILDLAND FIRE.
Other duties will include but are not limited to being a lead and/or unit instructor for NWCG fire courses for WILDLAND FIRE training, leading and participating in WILDLAND FIRE prevention activities.The Northeast Region is a fast paced and complex work environment that requires an individual who will work within the team goals and dynamics to be successful.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Experience with firefighting techniques, practices, terminology, equipment and other resources for WILDLAND FIRE management including support needs, communications, and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of fire and aviation weather technology, weather's effect on various fuel types, and knowledge of weather as it influences fire behavior.

  • Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
    • Must annually pass arduous level work capacity test
    • A valid driver's license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
    • Ability to obtain an NWCG qualification of Wildland Fire Investigator within 12 months of appointment to the position.
    • Ability to obtain an NWCG qualification of Single Resource Boss (Engine and/or Heavy Equipment) and Incident Commander Type 4 within 2 years of appointment to the position.
    • Actively working towards the NWCG qualification of Task Force Leader and Strike Team Leader.
    • Position is overtime eligible. Incumbent may be required to work beyond normal business hours for extended time periods during fire season.
    • This position will be assigned an agency vehicle. Position requires significant driving and field visits within geographic assigned area.

    Desired Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's Degree in Fire Science, Forestry, or other related field or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
    • Knowledge of Department of Natural Resources WILDLAND FIRE regulatory practices, burn permit processes, and experience conducting Wildland Fire Origin and Cause Determination investigations.
    • NIMS qualified as Task Force Leader, Strike Team Leader and ICT4
    • Completed FEMA ICS courses I-100, I-200, IS-700, IS-800.
    • Skilled in supervision, leadership and management of people

    Retirement and Deferred Compensation
