Department Overview
PG&E’s Power Generation Department manages and operates the largest privately-owned hydroelectric system in the nation. These renewable electric generation resources, located mostly at high elevation in California mountain ranges including the Sierra Nevada and southern Cascade mountains include 68 powerhouses, 184 miles of canals, 41 miles of flumes, 135 miles of tunnels, 19 miles of penstocks, 99 reservoirs, and 142,000 acres of watershed lands all covered by 26 operating licenses issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
Position Summary
This is an International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 1245 represented classification, which has over 100 years of experience representing employees at PG&E. This job is subject to collective bargaining.
A Water System Repairperson will engage in the construction, and repairs of all types of Hydro Water System structures and related facilities and equipment, including water collection and domestic Water Systems. Such employees will drive trucks and operate mechanical equipment such as Sno-Cat, tractor grader, backhoe, loaders, excavators and all equipment for general hauling, bulldozing, road maintenance, excavation and other similar work.
This position is a DOT (Department of Transportation) covered classification and is subject to random drug and/or alcohol screening.
**Offers for this position will be contingent upon review and approval by the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (JATC)**
PG&E is providing the hourly rate that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This position is subject to collectively bargained hourly wage rates and increases. The starting wage rate for this position is $62.09 per hour. This wage rate is specific to the locality of the job. The wage rate is based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity.
Job Responsibilities
- Conduct visual and mechanical inspections of dams, penstocks, canals, tunnels, ditches, flumes and other related Water Systems for powerhouse and facilities. Perform necessary repairs as needed or directed.
- Operate equipment such as snow-cat, tractor-grader, backhoe, loaders and excavators in order to make repairs.
- Perform welding, carpentry and/or concrete work. May use rigging/fall protection to climb up and down structures
- May perform rescue and first-responder duties for road maintenance and all types of water damage.
- May be assigned other work of similar nature as the occasion requires, including building maintenance of hydro facilities, inspections of tunnels or other confined spaces.
- Safely operate company vehicles and equipment
Qualifications
Minimum:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must possess a High School diploma, GED or equivalent work experience
- Must possess a valid California Class A Driver's Permit by Day 1 of hire
- Must have passed California DMV medical exam by day 1 of hire
- Passed an Apprenticeship Program
- Must be able to work with and/or around bodies of water
- Must be able to work with and/or around helicopters
- Ability to work in all types of weather extremes
- Ability to drive safely in all weather and road conditions
- Ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends and holidays
- Ability to lift 75 pounds or more
- Ability to work in remote areas by yourself at times
- Must be able to wear company provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Desired:
- 10+ years work experience in a Water System environment (Powerhouses and Water System facilities)
- 10+ years of experience with all types of hand power tools
- 5+ years of welding experience in arc, TIG, MIG, etc.
- 5+ years of experience in the operation of mechanized equipment associated with this work
- 5+ years of concrete forming and placement
- 5+ years of carpentry experience
- 5+ years of plumbing/pipefitting with steel and PVC
- 5+ years of operating heavy machinery such as snow-cat, tractor-grader, backhoe, loaders and excavators in order to make repairs.
- 1+ years of operating snow removal equipment
- Demonstrated knowledge of safe rigging practices
