Originally founded in 1997, Baskin Engineering (BE) is the first professional school at UC Santa Cruz. Over the past 25 years, Baskin Engineering has become a unique 21st century school of engineering and technology, characterized by evolutionary growth fueled by on-going research opportunities that open new areas of intellectual inquiry. Baskin Engineering has grown to include six academic departments, a variety of research centers and institutes, and has ambitious plans for further programmatic growth. The focus of Baskin Engineering educational programming is to instill strong basic knowledge for sound practice in science and ethical engineering for the well-being of society, and its diverse curricula facilitate creative thinking and prepare students for productive and rewarding careers. Baskin Engineering is focused on building collaborative connections and expanding instruction and research activities for faculty and students at UC Santa Cruz, both at its Santa Cruz campus and at its campus in Silicon Valley, the international center of technological innovation.

JOB SUMMARY
Involves supervision of professional staff, monitoring of staff development and professional growth, and partnership with director and assistant director on overall team needs. Program management includes leadership of orientation and new student initiatives. Involves counseling students on academic program policies and issues. Monitors student academic progress and assists students in making appropriate educational choices and decisions.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary: $80,300 - $93,400/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES
35% - Advising and Advising Administration
  • Applies advanced academic advising concepts and experience, identifies and refers for resolution of intricate student issues / grievances such as alleged discrimination, complex grade dispute issues, and students' personal crises.
  • Analyzes the consequences of departmental / school / college academic policies and recommends new or changed policies.
  • Advises Director and Assistant Director of Advising on the formulation of department policy by advising them on areas needing clarification and identifying solutions.
  • Recommends petition exceptions that affect the requirements of multiple departments.
  • Coordinates, reviews and advises Undergraduate directors, Colleges, chairs and faculty on transferability and applicability of non-UC courses and / or courses of the organization within or outside of the department that may affect ongoing requirements.
  • Based upon review of course evaluations and trends in the field may advise chair and Undergraduate Directors on curriculum development and modification.
  • Addresses unusual circumstances, complicated selection, and student appeals.
  • Develops and designs advising through learning management software, Canvas.
  • Compiles and reports student engagement through Canvas.
  • Approves and certifies students' programs of study for fulfillment of graduation requirements.
  • Advises students on academic, career and personal issues; identifies the education and career options appropriate for each student and assists with the analysis of each option, including possible outcomes and their implications; if needed, refers student to counseling services. Provides students with broad and comprehensive knowledge of university curriculum and course content and assists with decision-making.

35% - Administration and Leadershiip
  • Works closely with Director and Assistant Director of Undergraduate Advising to develop office priorities for successfully meeting advising needs of current and prospective BE students.
  • Provides direct supervision to Undergraduate Student Advisors who are providing the full range of academic advising to department students and service to department chairs / deans and faculty.
  • Monitors and evaluates employee performance of Undergraduate Advisors.
  • Recommends employee selection and corrective action if necessary.

25% - Program Management
  • Manages administration and planning of orientation sessions for large groups of new students in summer, fall, and winter quarters.
  • Coordinates with faculty and campus partners on orientation initiatives.
  • Assists with outreach and new student initiatives.

5% - Miscellaneous
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Advanced knowledge of and experience using advising and counseling techniques.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, project management.
  • Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, and ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Organizational and time management skills with the ability to multitask.
  • Experience supervising professional staff.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships, sufficient to work effectively with a diverse population.
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a team.
  • Ability to work independently.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Thorough knowledge of college / school policies, procedures, and requirements.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
  • The selected candidate will be required to work a hybrid work schedule and must be able to work successfully from a home/remote office and fulfill the requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
  • Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
