Position Summary
The Academic Advisor Trainee will be trained to become an Academic Advisor that serves as a staff member in the Fowler College of Business assigned to the General Business External Degree Online Completion Program in the Center for Student Success (CSS). Under direct supervision, the Academic Advisor Trainee will be trained to provide individual and group information and advising for a student population of approximately 600 undergraduates in the General Business External Degree Online Completion Program. This position works with the Center for Student Success, Global Campus, the General Business External Degree Online Completion Program and Admissions Coordinator, and the General Business External Degree Online Completion Program Director in the development of policies and procedures.
The Academic Advisor Trainee will be trained to be responsible for the academic advising of an assigned caseload of prospective and current students and graduation candidates in the General Business External Degree Online Completion Program. Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, the position will be trained to advise students through individual appointments, virtual sessions, over email, in person, and telephone as well as to counsel academically at-risk students and those not making progress towards degree to identify possible solutions and make referrals to appropriate College and campus resources.
The position works with the Center for Student Success and the Global Campus Student Success Team to coordinate orientation, recruiting activities, academic support, and campus engagement opportunities. The Academic Advisor Trainee will also work with the General Business External Degree Online Completion Program Director to provide information to students on any outstanding major preparation and lower division degree requirements that must be completed prior to graduation.
The Academic Advisor Trainee is an integral part of the Center for Student Success team and will provide staffing support at related events and assist other staff members as needed for successful maintenance of the unit's goals. Some evening and weekend hours will be required.
This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position with an anticipated end date of March 17, 2025 with the possibility of reappointment. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs. With adequate notice, some evening and weekend hours will be required.
The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.
Department Summary
The Fowler College of Business (FCB) consists of one school and four academic departments (Charles W. Lamden School of Accountancy, Finance, Management Information Systems, Management, and Marketing), a Dean, an Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, an Associate Dean for Research and Strategic Initiatives, an Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, a College Operations Manager / Director of Resource Management, a Director of Marketing & Communications, a Director for Graduate Programs, a Director for Undergraduate Programs, a Director for the Career Management Center, a Director for Assessment, and a Managing Director for the Wendy Gillespie Center for Advancing Global Business.
The Center for Student Success within the College provides all academic and informational advising for current, prospective, and former students in the Undergraduate Program. It also focuses on students experiencing academic difficulty and those participating in special programs. It provides assistance to students in filling out academic forms and petitions, and in understanding university and college policies, requirements, and procedures. The unit is responsible for implementing all policies, procedures, and decisions made regarding currently attending Business majors. The unit coordinates the following: primary commencement function (undergraduate for approximately 1,800 students/11,000 guests); undergraduate academic advising, tutoring, study abroad, incoming first year and transfer student orientation, among others.

Education and Experience
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field. Specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown below may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Key Qualifications
  • Ability to multi-task with day-to-day changes in priorities. Flexibility and attention to detail are required.
  • Ability to effectively handle and complete several ongoing projects and activities in a work environment characterized by frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to effectively use MS Office or Google Workspace and familiarity with web-based applications.
  • Ability to collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate data; reason logically, draw valid conclusions, and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information and records.
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with students and their support system, faculty, administrators, and staff and to work as a member of a team.
  • Ability to work with students in online degree programs as well as adult learners.
  • Ability to work some evening and weekend hours with adequate notice.

Compensation and Benefits
Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $3,764 per month.
Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,764 - $4,604 per month.
