Summary:
The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska is a federally recognized Tribe with its ancestral homeland located in Niobrara, NE. The Tribe does not have a reservation in the classic definition; rather, the Ponca Restoration Act defined its jurisdiction as a 'Service Delivery Area' comprised of 15 counties throughout parts of Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota. Within its Service Delivery Area, the Tribe offers a broad range of health, social, educational, and cultural services.
The primary responsibility of the Tribal Communications Specialist is to produce promotional materials dedicated to developing and maintaining a positive image of the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska, or maintaining or promoting understanding and favorable relations with the community or public at large.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
- Provide communications support materials for federal contracts and grants.
- Conceptualize and maintain a positive image of the Tribe to members and outside entities.
- Assist the Tribal Communications Director in promoting communication and facilitating the dissemination of information to members and outside entities.
- Maintain quality visuals and Tribal brand standards across all public outreach materials and media.
- Assist with providing communication support for tribal services and programs. Includes writing and/or editing content.
- Assist with event coverage, planning, and support, including photography and video.
- Provide support necessary for the creation of public relations materials necessary as part of community outreach and communications requirements for grants and the federal award.
- Other duties as assigned.
Relationships and Authority:
This position has no supervisory duties. Works in conjunction with directors, manager, other Ponca Tribe of Nebraska staff, and external entities.
Working Environment and Physical Demands:
Physical requirements include carrying/lifting up to 15 pounds, frequently; up to 25 pounds, regularly; and up to 50 pounds, occasionally. Visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to drive an automobile and operate audio/visual equipment, computer keyboard, and basic office equipment; subject to standing long periods, walking, carrying, lifting, twisting, and reaching to perform essential job functions. Working conditions are primarily in an office environment, but also entail travel to other locations and frequent coverage of outdoor events.
Qualifications:
Minimum:
- Associate's degree (or combination of equivalent education and experience) in graphic design, communications, public relations, or related field.
- Two years experience working in a professional publication or marketing environment.
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe CreativeSuite software.
- Experience in digital photography and videography, along with photo and video editing.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Valid driver's license and be insurable.
- Successfully pass drug and alcohol testing, motor vehicle, education, character and criminal background checks.
- Able and willing to travel.
Preferred:
- Bachelor's degree (or combination of equivalent education and experience) in graphic design, communications, public relations or related field.
- 3 or more years experience working in a professional publication or marketing environment.
- One or more years experience working with Native Americans or Native American organizations.
- Knowledge and understanding of Public Law 93-638: Indian Self-Determination Act, Tribal Organizations and funding opportunities.
Preference will be given to Ponca Tribe of Nebraska members or members of a federally recognized tribe. However, all qualified individuals are eligible.
