SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELOR POSITION SUMMARY
The Substance Abuse Counselor is responsible for delivering quality treatment to justice involved individuals with varying levels of substance use/abuse issues, and who are using a variety of addictive substances. The Counselor will collaborate with all disciplines to attain effectiveness in serving the patient population by evaluating and providing Substance Abuse treatment to incarcerated individuals diagnosed with a Substance Abuse disorder.
SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELOR SCHEDULE
- Full-Time
- Monday - Friday
- 8AM - 4:30 PM
- No weekends or holiday
SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELOR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assesses individual’s level of functioning, strengths and weaknesses related to primary substance use diagnosis.
- Orients individual to treatment process/program rules.
- Educates individuals on the effects of substance use on their physical, social and emotional lives.
- Delivers and reinforces evidence-based treatment/curricula.
- Performs individual and group therapeutic interventions as appropriate.
- Provides crisis intervention as needed.
- Develops treatment and discharge plans.
- Works with other professionals to collaborate on treatment or management of the patient to include discharge into aftercare program/community,
- Delivers and scores/interprets pre and post-tests, to include post-program surveys, as indicated.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- Possesses excellent communication skills
- Provides the timely and necessary preparation of documentation, records and reports.
SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELOR MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Graduation from a Master’s level program in Mental Health services.
- Minimum of two years employment in a social work capacity in a public or private agency or equivalent.
- Independent licensure in the State-of-practice preferred.
- Preferred Licensed Independent Counselors LISW or LPCC
- Must receive a satisfactory background investigation report.
