ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION VACANCY
SUMMARY: Currently searching for a motivated and responsible STEM Tutor to work in the ARCHES TRIO Student Support Services Program. ARCHES is looking to hire Engineering majors for the 2024 Spring semester-2025 Spring semester. ARCHES Tutors should have a strong desire to be part of team environment that supports the development of ARCHES students, CPP students with disabilities.
ABOUT US: As the largest employer of students on the Cal Poly Pomona campus, the Foundation offers valuable work experience and hands-on training to approximately 1,500 Cal Poly Pomona students each year. The Foundation offers positions in various fields; whether it is in the area of technology, science, retail, culinary arts, hospitality1500 management, leadership or research grants, these student employees participate in Cal Poly Pomona's learn-by-doing philosophy and acquire practical skills in their designated field of study.
The Foundation also contributes operating support to nearly 1,100 Foundation and scholarship programs every year, including Bronco Athletics and the Norman J. Priest Scholarship. In addition, the Foundation administers grants and contracts, contributes to campus security, and supports several university publications. The Foundation contributes over $1 million annually to Cal Poly Pomona.
SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU WILL GET TO DO (this is just a small sampling of work variety):
Under the leadership of the Resource Coordinator, Tutors will be responsible for the following:
- Meet weekly with ARCHES participants in 1-on-1 tutoring sessions in an in-person and virtual format.
- Assist tutees with understanding the connections between class lecture, course notes, and text materials; making connections between previously understood information and new material.
- Serve as a college role model by promoting a supportive & friendly environment for a diverse student population.
- Utilize technology and traditional learning aids to help students develop effective learning techniques and study strategies.
- Maintaining accurate records of tutorial sessions and student progress.
- Mentor students for study strategies, time management, organization, and learning styles.
- Adhere to university confidentiality standards when meeting with students.
- Assist in administrative duties including, answering phone calls, and screening student inquiries and providing basic information to answer questions and/or direct student to appropriate resources if needed (e.g. ARCHES advisors, DRC, CAPS, college Advising Centers). Assist students who may be in distress.
- Responsible for maintaining a high level of professionalism and creating a welcoming environment that promotes inclusivity and equity.
- Participate in training and development on topics related disability, mentoring, tutoring skills and applying these concepts with students.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- CPP junior (+60 sem. units), senior, or graduate student in good academic standing (Transfer students must have completed a minimum of 1 term at CPP).
- Minimum 2.5 overall GPA (3.0 or higher preferred).
- Must have received grade of "B-" or higher in courses tutored.
- Attend weekly mandatory meetings/trainings on select Fridays from 1-3pm.
- Familiarity with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, CPP Connect, and Microsoft Outlook, desirable.
- Experience working with first-generation, low-income, and students with disabilities, desirable.
- Experience tutoring and knowledge of tutoring methods or theories, desirable but not mandatory.
